Armor and Sword.

 

Far Cry, The Way the Wind Blows, The Main Monkey Business and Malignant Narcissism are all great songs too.

 

Spindrift, Bravest Face, We Hold On, Hope and Working Them Angels are good.

 

Faithless is a bit clunky in the verses. I love the message and chorus though.

 

The Large Bowl is a forgettable affair.

I agree on the list except the MEH part which I would call GOOD.

Indeed, Hope is a very nice little piece. I just listened to Broons Bane and it is also an awesome little piece of acoustic work.

 

I wish Alex could do more of these.

There are several I really like on this album but I voted for The Way The Wind Blows. I also love Faithless, Workin' Them Angels, Hope, Far Cry and Malnar. The rest are good but those are the ones I go to first.

Far Cry by miles.

 

I was very disappointed in this album -- after VT I was expecting something similar in heaviness but with better production. Far Cry was promising, so I bought the album after hearing it on YouTube, very pumped. And then found most of the songs to be more along the lines of mid-tempo snooze fests.

The album is paced poorly too. But of course, this is my opinion. For what it's worth (about 2 wooden nickles I suppose!)

 

I can't believe more fans don't dig The Main Monkey Business. It's definitely better than Malignant Narcissism, which sounds like a YYZ retread.

 

I never really thought much about Workin' Them Angels until my wife heard the song and fell in love with it, and I started hearing it differently. She has that effect -- some of her fave Rush songs are some that I maybe overlooked not because I hated them but just because there were better tunes on a particular album that grabbed me. That's an example of one.

 

The only other songs on the album I listen to regularly are:

 

The Way the Wind Blows and (sometimes) Armor and Sword.

 

The rest of the album I can do without. If I had to choose between this album or VT, VT would win everytime, despite the production. I am not trying to be a hater, because I have always found something to love about every Rush album, but I feel that the song writing was weaker on this one. It's really more like Test for Echo part II in mood and tone to me. But I like T4E better than S&A by a long shot. So there you go. Ramble mode: off.

Armor and Sword all the way! For me an outstanding song that was even better on S&A Live. Really hope they take play this one on the next tour.

1) The Main Monkey Business - right up there with La Villa, YYZ, and LTTA as one of the best instrumentals

 

2) The Larger Bowl - was the first song (besides Far Cry) that I actually "got"...have yet to understand the hate for it

 

3) Spindrift - awesome tune...love the eerie intro, and that bridge section is one of the best parts on S&A

 

4) Armor & Sword - bone-chilling and emotional...Ged sings with great emotion, and the guitars are fantastic

 

5) Far Cry - rockin' opener...just as good for me as it was the first time I heard it (just wish it had a smokin' solo in there!)

 

6) Workin' Them Angels - awesome song...the lyrics are good, and the song flows nicely throughout

 

7) MalNar - rockin' instrumental...but I wish it was longer (a la YYZ).

 

8) Good News First - much better than most people give it credit for. I think it's by far the most underrated song on the album.

 

9) The Way The Wind Blows - solid tune that I actually found myself liking more after hearing it live

 

10) Bravest Face - I like the lyrics in the chorus...it's a good tune that gets lost in the shuffle on this album after a strong Side 1.

 

11) We Hold On - solid tune to close out the album, and I love that bass intro, but I've found myself listening to it less over time.

 

12) Hope - nice little piece by Al...but I just don't find myself listening to it very often

 

13) Faithless - good song...but I just can't get into it very often. I think the lyrics just don't resonate with me...however, fantastic solo! One of Al's best on this album.
