I want to move that Anakin boy to that other thread about punching people in the face. I can't think of another kid in film that I hated more. And then there's Jar Jar...

I see your Jake Lloyd and raise you Jaden Smith in After Earth. Which reminds me, Shamalamadingdong has another movie coming out this Friday.

Shamalamadingdong.....!

I've actually come to like this movie more over the years, thanks to my son. Episodes II and III not so much, especially III.

Pi was cool.

Now that's one crazy film. I watched it years ago when it came out, at a Sunday night session with my sister. She left halfway through, saying she couldn't handle it. If she only knew what this guy's next film would be (Recquiem for a Dream)...

Fear and Desire.

One of Stanley Kubrick's first films, this anti-war movie from 1952 has some interesting and important things to say. It's done by a very young Kubrick who was obviously still finding his way. Feels like a Twilight Zone episode at times. That's a good thing.

Grade: B

I'm watching that Bond flick too. Couldn't finish it this morning so will do this evening.

I don't remember nearly all of it but every 15 minutes or so I can vaguely recall bits of a particular scene.

How do you like it so far??

Christopher Lee was good and Maud Adams was sensual but I forgot how much of a comedy it was. Hard to swallow 007 having wine bottles thrown at him by a midget. And I'm not a fan of that redneck Sheriff being in Bond flicks either...he was in Live & Let Die, yeah? Golden Gun wasn't as bad as The World Is Not Enough but I can't say it's a good 007 movie either.

But the movie DID take me back to my trips to Hong Kong and Thailand over the last 10 years. A lot of those Bond sites were (unsurprisingly) tourist sites too. The first time I went to Thailand I went to Scaramanga's Island located in Phuket. I forgot the real name but (for tourists) it's dubbed "James Bond Island" and has had crazy amounts of visitors (following the movie's release) despite how small it actually is. Anyway, there was too much comedy in this 007 flick and it feels dated.

I like the fact that they use the midget rather than just the standard heavy turning up and leading to what would have a typical Bond fight scene. The midget idea was fine. I don't mind the Sheriff, but I do agree his second appearance is similar to Jaws making a second appearance in Moonraker which turned out to be a bad idea. I don't mind the comedy either, I think humour is one of the things lacking in recent Bond films and actually contributes to them being just run of the mill spy thrillers instead of proper Bond films. What makes this film for me though is Christopher Lee as Scaramanga my favourite Bond villain performance.

I think the comedy went a bit overboard in this though. Even when there was that chase scene they added a kind of screwball / corkscrew sound effect when 007 jumped that river in his car.

Lee & Adams were good I thought (particularly Lee) but, as a result, it made most other things seem uneven: their more serious roles compared to the comedy of virtually everyone else. One thing I did think was funny was when Bond shoved that kid in the canal after the boy made the boat go faster and wanted money.

Yeah and the kid went: "Bloody tourist!"
