The Greatest Double LP Studio Album Ever Thread!

I'm blasting The Mighty Zeppelin's double masterpiece tonight, "Physical Graffiti."

It's always been my favorite Zep album. Not sure if it's my all time favorite double album though.

Which double studio album is your favorite of all time?

We all know the standards:

The Wall

The White Album

Physical Graffiti

Goodbye Yellow Brick Road (even though this was put on one cd it's still a double lp!)

Tommy

Quadrophenia

Electric Ladyland

Sorry kids, double live albums don't count. That would be too easy!!

The more I think about it, the more I have to give an edge to "Quadrophenia."

Signed,

"Dr. Jimmy"

The Smashing Pumpkins - Mellon Collie & The Infinite Sadness

I was a big fan of the Pumpkins back in the day...even seen 'em 6 times (4 times on the Infinite Sadness tour...AWESOME shows!!!) , but I feel MC&TIS was just an OK album at best 'cuz it really only had 4 or 5 great songs, a couple good songs and the rest was just filler.... a lotta filler.

I agree. But, Physical Graffiti is an almost perfect double album, also.

The order isn't perfect, and things could move around, but these are more or less my faves in general order:

#1 - Yes - Tales From Topographic Oceans

#2 - Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band - Trout Mask Replica

#3 - The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Electric Ladyland

#4 - Can - Tago Mago

#5 - The Beatles - The White Album

#6 - Jehtro Tull - Living in the Past*

#7 - Amon Duul II - Dance of the Lemmings

#8 - Amon Duul II - Yeti

#9 - Jimi Hendrix - First Rays of the New Rising Sun

#10 - The Mothers of Invention - Freak Out!

#11 - Genesis - The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway

#12 - Astra - The Weirding

#13 - Pink Floyd - Ummagumma

#14 - Miles Davis - Bitches Brew

#15 - The Future Sound of London - Lifeforms

#16 - George Harrison - All Things Must Pass

#17 - The Who - Quadrophenia

#18 - Pink Floyd - The Wall

#19 - Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffiti

#20 - Ozric Tentacles - Erpland

#21 - Bob Dylan - Blonde On Blonde

#22 - Aphex Twin - Selected Ambient Works - Volume 2

* I know that Living in the Past is technically a compilation, and it contains a couple of live tracks (Ummagumma contains half live tracks), but it contains a lot of songs that were never previously on a regular album of theirs, and, well, it just plain rocks, so there it is.

These are the albums I would consider the greatest double LP's. Tales is easily the best Double LP out there.

Smashing Pumpkins - MCIS

One of the few albums I know entirely by heart.

If we're talking those that now fit on a single CD, London Calling followed by Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me by The Cure.

Some good hip hop ones as well:

Outkast - Speakerboxxx/The Love Below

Wu Tang Forever

Notorious B.I.G. - Larger Than Life

Physical Graffiti. I love how balanced that double album is. Hoping to add Mr. Wilson's new double LP to this list at the end of September.

But, Wilson's new one isn't a double album. It's two SEPARATE albums packaged together. wacko.gif
