I used to be a mega DT fan back in the day and Mike was easily my favorite member. He represented the idea of a musical fan-boy living his dream come true. He seemed like a genuine good guy that I would enjoy spending time with. However, as a drummer, Everything that I heard with Portnoy involved seemed a little too rehashed for my tastes. Why don't you go to YouTube and check out Anything by Buddy Rich or Billy Cobham or Dennis Chambers and ask Neil or Gavin to play it? It would be funny to watch them try.
