treeduck
I'm hoping the Flying Colours album will be a true metal album! Peter Collins is producing and he chose the name. So that's why "Colours" is spelled correctly... It's out in March! 11 tracks! Portnoy sings on one track! edit: Actually no they've spelled it wrong. I just always automatically see colors as colours. Remember kiddies the language is English and most of you prog freaks are into English prog bands so let's have the proper English spelling, not the colony spelling. Repeat after me C. O. L. O. U.R. S. Colours. Edited November 27, 2011 by treeduck

Anglicized words with an ou- in it looks way cooler IMO I'm not even quite sure who John Sykes is...but the way MP described it, it doesn't sound like the stuff I'm into. Rod in Toronto
Here's what Mike said about Flying Colours on his twitter page: "For those asking: Yes & Kansas + Beatles & Queen + U2 & Radiohead + Chili Peppers & Muse + Transatlantic & Dregs = Flying Colors!" Sounds promising, eh?

The Owl
I just hope that Neal is not writing all the lyrics for this album as well, as was with "The Whirlwind" transatlantic CD.. Don't get me wrong I loved that album, but Neal does tend to get a bit preachy on that one as opposed to the first 2 TA albums.

His unique playing style is his biggest fault. He rehashes everything. Much like Peart's drum solo's for the last 20 years I don't know much about drumming, but one adjective I would NEVER use for Portnoy is repetitive. He was the mastermind of all the changes in setlists in his career with Dream Theater, pushed for longer and longer tours and 3 hour shows, and even took care of the screen projections during concerts, which actually changed from night to night. Then, when he left Dream Theater, he's chosen to work with a variety of artists, and has so many side projects now that even his die hard fans (myself included) lose track of what he's up to. He may or may not be repetitive with his drumming - I doubt that he is, anyway - but you could never acuse him of being satisfied with doing "business as usual". He's always pushing for new ideas and new ways to please the fans. Haters will Always Hate. Sure Neil's solo has become a snore fest. Peart will always have one thing Portnoy does not. Skill. Well, that's just a silly thing to say. It's fine if you don't like Portnoy's playing, but to say he doesn't have skill is, quite simply, wrong. The guy can flat out play the drums. This statement leads me to believe one thing , you know Nothing about playing the Drums. Carry on I've been playing drums for about a decade now. I am no specialist, but I know my way around a kit. Maybe it is just personal opinion or what have you. But I find Mike Portnoy's playing from album to album, band to band, and style to style all exactly the same. His fills and grooves are redundant and he never seems to expand on something new. Edited November 30, 2011 by deadwing2112
The K Man
Just because he might have a redundant playing style doesn't mean he has no skill. Portnoy clearly has tons of drumming skill.

Dude you haven't heard much DT if you're saying Portnoy doesn't have skills. By god listen to the way he keeps all that shit together for up to 20 minutes a pop. Does he overplay fills sometimes? Yeah, I think so but he's still a monster on the kit without question. Mike had / has the fan's mentality, which is something I miss with the mostly non-rotating setlists now. I'm sure it's a huge relief to the rest of DT though, to not have to constantly practice 95% of their catalogue all the time in between shows.
