He would mentally torture the tree and then slowly, painfully, saw it until it cracked and bled and fell to the ground.. ...But I don't think any of those tactics would have much of an effect on a tree. I've cut down saplings no more than 2" in diameter with a chainsaw, just because I could. Besides, the song implies an entire forest got leveled. Aw Mara, you've disappointed me now... I didn't do it just to "be mean to trees"! The saplings are in an area where they will never grow and we are trying to somehow beautify that part of our yard. Somehow. . . I had to take down larger trees, and it was easier just to use the chainsaw on the saplings as well.
