The Analog Cub
New rankings after finally listening to The Astonishing: Six Degrees of Musical Porn1. Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence2. They have their moments.10. Train Of Thought11. Systematic Chaos LOL BAD12. Falling Into Infinity Never listened to the debut, only live performances. The Astonishing took a lot of time to grow on me. Ultimately, it's not the kind of music I prefer from DT. It's full of great work from JLB and JR but the Broadway musical stuff isn't my thing. It's great for what it is, I think, and it's commendable to see them try something like this. But I have to be in the mood to listen to it. Some stuff on there stands out as really great songs by themselves like Three Days, When Your Time Has Come, or The Gift Of Music. Overall it's better than Images and Words pt. 2 ADToE, ToT, SC, and far better than FII. I am happy that there are fans like Mick who eat that kind of stuff up to make up for the people who aren't into musicals

Del_Duio
I f***ing love LaBrie by the way You should, he's the man! RE: The Astonishing- The 2nd disc as a whole is better than the first. I still don't know almost all the 'song' titles however The Path that Divides, Moment of Betrayal, and Whispering Shadow (?) are awesome stand-outs. There's lots on the 1st disc that's great too (the first 4-6 songs in a row especially) but a lot of the other stuff- while still DECENT to GOOD- isn't on par. Segue Myles
The Astonishing honestly killed the growing adoration I had for this band. I was always convinced they were more pretenders than genre giants, but The Astonishing is such an empty, bloated mess it somehow infected my enjoyment of their earlier work. Hard to say if I will ever be 100% sold in this band. Some great stuff here and there but after three months I truly don't think they have added anything to my life, or made much of an impact on my listening habits. But some enjoyable records do obviously exist. Fun but in my opinion very throwaway.

One of the issues is that since they started, there´s been millions of copycats, and now their "claim to faim" is not so exclusive anymore. But the impact of Images & Words and Awake in the mid 90´s was huge!

Everyone copied them so much in the 80s that their unique sound didn't sound as special and different from the pack as their 70s material did.

Not sure what bands since Images And Words came out sound like them as this style is not strictly my cup of tea.

Amazing band. Mick Yeah they stand out for me as well. Based solely on the debut, which is very uneven, I thought they were mind blowing! What they could so early on impressed me so I look forward to listening to them evolve. I expect GREAT things based on that debut and snippets here and there. Right now they are just ok, but I expect that to change. Edited March 11, 2016 by Segue Myles

Mr. Not
The Astonishing, as I feared, seems to have gone for quantity > quality. It's their lowest ranked album on RateYourMusic. If they trimmed half of it, they'd have another masterpiece like Scenes from a Memory on their hand. But oh well. Maybe over time my mind will change and I'll find it to be great.

If they trimmed half of it, they'd have another masterpiece like Scenes from a Memory on their hand. But oh well. Maybe over time my mind will change and I'll find it to be great. I'm pondering how they could've released it. I'm thinking removed all of the filler ballads, gone ballsier on the important songs, and released an album that's closer in length to 1 hour than 2 hours. Maybe a year later, they release their live DVD with a bonus cd containing all of the filler they took out. That way the clutter becomes bonuses as opposed to bloat on the main album, and we get the best of both worlds: more content for those who liked it, and a more listenable main album. RUSHHEAD666
HAHA Good shit. From Scenes to Systematic they were the best in the world at what they do. The rest can bite me. Jesus Christ! No wonder you hate Ghost, ABBA and KISS! You are a Dream Theater Wanker! LOL! I still buy every record but come on man. Their last great record was "AWAKE." Ok maybe "Scenes." "Octopussy" varium was ok but so Floyd. DT = COVER BAND. Then are not unique. They are a rip off artist. Text Book Blah Bland Band Buffoons. Intellectual musicians with not an ounce of originality. At least Portnoy is trying different things in the music world. Dream Theater is well the same old hack band that well should just play in small dingy broken down theaters across the world. Dream Theater is a Permanent Wave Of Opening Acts. I mean AXE. Hatchet. Axe.. And Saw. Dream Theater are the wannabe Trees. Time to cut them down and turn them into a log cabin. Mike's grandma would be proud right? It all comes back.It all comes back full circle. Jordan Rudess is a useless IT TIT. IBM has more soul than that guy.
