Wow, in his post-game comments LA manager Dave Roberts through his team under the bus calling guys out for bad at bats and swinging at pitches out of the zone. Out of the gate the ump was calling strikes on pitches well out of the zone, so they had little choice but to chase. Roberts should have called that out, imo.

I'm not sure I understand. "Through his team under the bus?" Roberts was using his team as an intermediary while they were ALL under a bus to criticize themselves for bad at bats? Or were they criticizing the Giants? I would think they'd like the Giants to have bad at-bats.

Why were they all under a bus at the same time?

Jerk.

Giants make the third out at third base down 6-2.

Little League 101. Inexcusable.

But let's focus on what matters, namely the crappy job the Umps are doing behind the plate that pressures teams to play stupid. In SF-LA game 1 it was an expanded strike zone (Torres had an accuracy rate of 93%, with two horrible strike calls coming early in one Dodger at bat that forced LA to swing at pitches low and away all night), and last night seeing Hernandez inexplicably squeeze the zone after calling Ruf out on a pitch 3" outside the zone. That pressured SF to throw tighter pitches, which LA eventually took advantage of in the 6th after a walk was given to Chris Taylor on a series where 3 of four called balls were in the zone.

He may be the worst, but a bigger problem is that he's not that much of an outlier.

Yeah he was utter shit last night..........his ever changing strike zone for both teams was brutal.

Which is why he got a playoff game in the first place.

What an absolute BULLSHIT call against the Rays in the 13th. You shouldn't benefit from your own defensive incompetence.

yep, that was complete bullshit.

Here's the rule.

So the appropriate application of the rule would be for the umpire to note when the ball went over tthe fence after hitting Renfroe and where Diaz and Kiermeier were and awarded them two bases from there. It would have been one run in and a runner at third mostly likely.

Haven't seen the play, but is it not the case that fielder never had full possession? That seems to be the argument.

Here's the play. It was 3-2 with 2 outs so Diaz would have been off with the pitch.

The rule is clear. 2 bases if a player knocks the ball over a fence. That puts the runner at first on third and the batter at second.

This is bullshit as a rule, but apparently right. Passan later posted this as an addition to the previous tweet to clarify.

So the Red Sox actually benefited from their incompetence. This needs to change, and probably will as a result. But the Red Sox are still cursed.

”From the time of the pitch.” Pretty clear to me.

Don Shula would be proud of you calling for a rule change.

Its clear in the manual, but not in the rule book.

Tom Brady would be proud of you for approving of a rule that helps your team but is a little wary that you might be coming to that conclusion from a sense of fairness rather whether it helps your team and will go wobbly when the situation is reversed. But he needn't worry, IMO, knowing how much esteem you have for Mr. Kraft.

Any bounding fair ball is deflected by the fielder into the stands, or over or under a fence on fair or foul territory, in which case the batter and all runners shall be entitled to advance two bases.”
