  1. www.yukonbladegrinder.com December 12, 2012 2:05 pm A Yukon Blade Grinder Exclusive Report Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony Itinerary: What to expect on Rush’s special night By John Cleese, Host of Talking Cheese with John Cleese On assignment from Codpiece Theatre Magazine At 2 pm on 12-12-12, major global seismic activity was reported. Not from earthquakes, or from an Ancient Mayan Calendar prediction, but from the collective global orgasm Rush fans, both young and old experienced. The announcement of the band’s induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has indeed moved the needle worldwide, and beyond. A tsunami of pride has swept over Canada, and the rest of nerd world with such wonderful and timely news. With precision only ascribed to the finest of chronographs, the Yukon Blade Grinder, as they say in the bayous of Louisiana, is on this story like white in rice. This is a big deal in Canada. There is historical significance to this honor. So, the government of Canada has declared this day a new national holiday, dubbing it: “The Three Canadian’s Who’ve Made a Difference Day”. Wow, well done indeed. A tip of the hat, and a fine lunch of pickled herrings for the band should be in order. Move over Boxing Day! Such honor will certainly flush the chumps, and they are many. Former naysayers are resurfacing as life long supporters of the band, and the aroma of a fresh appreciation coming from critics across the globe has the band feeling loved, and tightly spooned. The worm has turned. Certainly, no harm was done to the band’s present relevance with the release of the epic Clockwork Angels, and the countless awards from the world of music and entertainment print. Details of such sacred ceremonies are often secret, but not from this media beacon. For after the announcement was made, the RRHOF induction night itinerary was revealed via teleconference at CNN, and the Grinder, with an ear to the earth, has learned that prominent citizens of Canada shall lead the way. The Presenters and Tributes For those who are not in the know, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has rules and procedures to follow. In the case of the presenters, Rule 1 sector A says: the musician(s) may choose one primary presenter, with the RRHOF committee choosing another. While the bands choice is currently guarded under lock and key, the presumptive honor will go to former producer Terry Brown. The committee on the other hand, has chosen none other than Rolling Stone Emeritus Editor, Chip Gherkov. On his relationship with the band, and subsequent honor, he had this to say. “I’ve always been a huge supporter of the band, evidenced by the magazine’s support with countless articles and thorough positive reviews…so, for the committee this was a natural fit. They know we’ve been behind them all the way. I’m honored to help the band get their due.” Thanks Rolling Stone. The “reach around” is appreciated. Every inductee has musical and personal tributes dedicated to illustrating and highlighting their career. The Yukon Blade Grinder has confirmed that at least one of the personal tributes will come from Canadian Astronaut and friend of the band, Jacques St. Claire. His speech will be transmitted via the newly installed Lerxt Galactic Audio Module (or, the “Eludium Pue 36 Explosive Space Modulator” as Alex has christened it), an experimental music laboratory of the International Space Station (ISS). The ISS, who’s morning wake up interlude for the astronauts is comprised of the Rush’s magnum opus Cygnus X1 Books 1 & 2, has just docked with the one billion dollar module, rumored to contain everything the band will need while in space to conduct sound wave experimentation, pointed at galaxies that may contain life. Far out. Much more is know about the musical tributes and performers at this time. According to Billboard magazine, “Something for Nothing” and a surprise cover song not written by the band, “Three is a Magic Number”, will be performed by hometown charity and pet project of the band, the vaunted Toronto Urban Resource Development League. Members will perform alongside legendary Atlanta gospel group The Church on Fire Choir. Reports are they will be performing with the Geddy, Alex and Neil during their acoustic set. This choice makes even the curmudgeonliest of Yukon Blade Grinder reporters think “Wow! Those guys still blow up boundaries, perceptions, and stereotypes don’t they? Not bad for sexagenarians.” Not to be outdone by children and a choir from Atlanta, Canadian Minister of Electronic Music, Rik Emmett, will be lead the tribute band with immortals such as Sebastian Bach, Foo Fighter alumnus Taylor Hawkins, Toronto legends Bryan Adams and John Roberts, and finally bassist Les Claypool. Right now the band, known only as “Back Bacon”, is working on a medley rumored to contain classics such as: Working Man, Anthem, Spirit of Radio, Red Barchetta, Time Stand Still (with Canadian songbird Ann Murray), and Roll the Bones. The only certainty is Seven Cities of Gold, of which says Emmett, “Sebastian said that he would eat a dog penis on stage if we played that song, so we’re up for that.” Assuming control as the surprise musical tribute, metal super group Metallica, will pay homage with Closer to the Heart and 2112 (Overture, Temple of Syrinx, and Finale). Kirk Hammett issued this statement on Metallica’s participation, “f**k yeah—we’re there dudes!!!” With such line-ups, failure is not an option and someone is likely to pass out. And finally…decisions ad nauseum Questions regarding what the hall will exhibit in relation to Rush are flooding the office of Ray Danniels. For the fans, it’s of the highest concern. With a catalog spanning almost 40 years, it’s difficult to choose what to display. The band’s wardrobe history could be a nightmare straight out of Spinal Tap. What to include? A statue of a curious dog sniffing a hydrant? Neil’s drumset? Will Geddy’s coonskin hairdo make it in? Or what of Neil’s spirit quest of the early 1990’s with his “Straight Outta Compton” lid? Could the immortal rapping skull make an appearance? What of Kimonos on skinny white men? Flava Flav with his Watchmaker Rolex around his neck? This will undoubtedly vex the band right up to the last minute. Ray Danniels issued statement confirming the band will “represent every decade with integrity, and art as expression—not as market campaigns”. So for now Rush fans—wear your pride and let your heart glow—the favored sons of Canada are going home where they belong—The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Until the next crumb of news falls from the table of Lerxt, Dirk, or Pratt, the Yukon Blade Grinder bids you, in the immortal words of the Von Trapp Family singers—“So long, farewell…you know the rest…good night!”

  2. OK, it's my first (and probably only) tattoo. It's not really to represent my love for the band...they brought to light all the alchemy symbols and "amalgamation" was a fitting tribute to my husband and kids and the happy home we have. As a photographer, I've always wanted an infinity symbol, so it works in that respect as well as with the family link. It took all of 7 minutes to have done and it wasn't bad, discomfort-wise. It's on my left inner wrist. I just love it! It is VERY black...this b&w conversion kind of dulled how vibrant a black it is. It rocks!http://apageatatime.net/tat.jpg

  3. Got the full version off iTunes yesterday. Liking it a lot. Cracking musicianship, as usual. Good riff, nice guitar solo, love the way it ends.

  10. What? Halo Effect? That has always been my least fav on CA. Sounds like a SnA leftover. There are plenty of great tracks on CA for sure but to me nothing beats The Garden from the guitar solo to the end for goosebumps. Pure atmosphere.

  11. On Your Feet...by a country mile. Those first 3 BOC albums are flawless. There wasn't a bad not in the bunch and they captured it perfectly. The other two are amazing albums as well, but OYFOOYK is the one that did it for me.

  15. Played once in college. I'm almost as bad at disc golf as I am real golf. Fun, though.

  18. I used to play quite a bit when I lived in Wisconsin. Then I moved to Minnesota and the 45 mins to an hour it took to play a round was wasted in traffic and I couldn't justify taking any more time away from my family to play. I have some buddies that every year have one day where they play 72 holes in Wisconsin in the spring and another day where they play 72 holes in Minneapolis. They're way too hardcore for me.

  19. This is a great course in San Diego. http://morleyfield.com/ I used to play twice a week, in my youth. Now, probably twice a year. An extremely fun sport, which can be very competitive, with or with out the excessive beer drinking. I pulled off a few hole-in ones in my day.....the joyous sound of rattling chains.

  21. I'd love to hear another Rush album with lots of synth. Remember that electronic music technology has come on leaps and bounds since the 80s with so many new styles of music since - e.g. house, trance, jungle, ambient, dubstep, etc. Just imagine the possibilities if Rush were to utilise that kind of technology now! I think it could be some of the most ground breaking stuff they've ever done. It's not as if the keyboards ever really got in way of Ged's bass playing - many Rush fans (myself being one of them) agree that his best bass riffs were written in the GUP-HYF synth period. For me it was when the band started to "strip down" try "going back to thier roots" after HYF, the quality of the songs began to suffer. I think they should have continued push the boundaries technology and genre-wise rather than back down like they did. It seems kind of ironic to me how Peart is still pushing things technology-wise when it comes to his solos but when it comes to the band as whole, they just don't seem to bother any more. Porcupine Tree and Muse are still doing it, so why not Rush?

  22. Well now that they know the CA songs can hold their own live, maybe they'll replace the PW songs with Signals songs on the 2nd leg and the setlist will look like this: Set 1: Clockwork Angels (In its Entirty) (with Strings section of course) Set 2: Far Cry Subdivsions Analog Kid Open Secrets / Lock and Key The Weapon New World Man / Digital Man (Return of the Strings to the Stage) Distant Early Warning (with GUP Live string asian intro) Tears Losing It Nobody's Hero Manhattan project The Percussor (Drum solo) Red Sector A / Dreamline YYZ (Strings Exit Stage Left) Hemispheres (Prelude) Xanadu (Entire) The Spirit of Radio Encore: Tom Sawyer 2112 (O/T/F) :dweez: :dweez:

  23. Really, Still Bitching about the setlist.

  24. You know I like this set list even though they ommited Losing It because I grew up with the 80's RUSH era. Now that said, I can see how many fans could be pissed with this set. Not one Epic song. Combined only three song from PeW and MP. Really? It's Signals 30th Anniversary and they show more love to Power Windows. Not one song from CP, Presto or VT not to mention the 70's. Do they know how great Xanadu, Jacobs Ladder or La Villa would have sounded with strings? Working Man again? <!--emo&--><img src='http://www.therushforum.com/html/emoticons/doh.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='doh.gif' /><!--endemo--> I can see why some people are pissed! Don't you people understand that they OPENED THE SHOW with "Subdivisions" and then Geddy said Happy Birthday to "The Analog Kid," a Signals song that hasn't been played in FOREVER?

  25. The idea of an era is that it starts at a certain point in time and at a later point it ends, as a new era commences and other eras follow. You can't leap backwards and start some old era up again once it's finished like some kind of music fan Dr Who. It's not just about synths, it's about time and place. The time and place where the synth era existed is gone forever. Even if they did a synth album next it wouldn't be a Synth era album because the synth era ended around 1990. It would either be a throwback retro synth album or a new kind of synth album altogether... :D-13:

  26. In my opinion, these guys only focus on things little teenage girls adore vocal-wise. If there's a group that has a decent singer and sounds better with auto-tune...Boom, they're automatically nominated for something. But, Geddy's voice is so out there compared to other singers. He is in all honesty, out of the normal, when it comes to singing. I personally, think his singing is one of my favorites of all time (aside from Peter Gabriel and select others). But, what these guys focus on are popular, normal talented teenage/early 20's guys. Might as well replace the name "Grammy Awards" with "Disney Channel Awards". This isn't something that is going to necessarily bother me, really...But, it would be nice to get more attention on these guys because they deserve it so much more than other groups out there. They actually work their asses off to do what they do. These little kids now, these days, use auto tune, random moderate musicians, and other people to write their lyrics and instrumental aspects. It's almost pathetic that you basically have to have sub-par talent to gain infinite amount of money.

  27. I don't even know what to say. Thanks for all of the kind words, everyone. It was just a spontaneous post of what I felt in my heart - nothing special. I guess it made an impression. That's very cool I got quoted. Even cooler for Geddy, Alex and Neil to finally get the acknowledgement they so richly deserve. I'm happy I could represent TRF. I really enjoy my time here discussing Rush and other topics with all of you. Thank you. CG

  30. Man, I remember watching his drum videos back in the early 2000's and thinking "wow, what a cool and humble drummer". He was a huge inspiration to me and seemed to have a ton of integrity and now he's turned into this loud-mouthed, wannabe lead vocalist 'fawkin' metal' asshole diva he's been for the past few years. I can't even pinpoint when his persona switched, but I'm pretty sure it was during the 6DOIT time period. I want 90's Mike Portnoy back, where he stayed behind the kit and wrote innovative drum parts and kept his mouth shut. It's sad to see one of my previous idols fall so hard, but he's making it really hard to give a shit anymore

  31. As a long time fan, I must say Mike has all the rights to complain about promoters not honoring contract clauses by not giving the band the right gear, right support on stage and all of that...but of all the channels he had to complain, he chose the worst of all, THE STAGE! Fans have nothing to do with it, and not many would realize there was an issue with his mic...it would be easy to wait for the song to end and then fix it. I think it´s all starting to sink in for Mike, and he realized this is what he has to live with now in his career: much smaller venues, having to start up different bands from scratch, poor travelling conditions from city to city etc etc. Maybe this tantrum sort of summarizes his frustration with his new career path. As much as it is fun to play with a bunch of different artists, starting over from scratch when you´re such an established musician has its challenges. I gotta say, this band is kicking ass though. I tried to post some videos in another post but couldn´t do it...they´re doing killer versions of Derek´s solo stuff, some DT tracks from Falling Into Infinity etc.
