grep
I met him once, briefly. A true gentleman, and a gentle man. Even though he looked kind of intimidating even when he was sick. It takes a hell of a lot for someone to impress me. That 10 seconds I interacted with him will stay with me for life - what an amazing human being. May he rest in peace. Goodbye champ.

Ancient Ways
It's amazing how he went from being a VERY polarizing figure to more of an older statesman. Time changes perspectives. Rip.

Principled Man
His greatest accomplishment by far was refusing to be drafted and sent to Vietnam. It takes a real man to do that. Just my opinion..... :) :)

foghorn-leghorn
A wonderful boxer, he fought in a time where there were so many fantastic heavy weights, yet he put them all to the sword. And to think, his best years were lost when his licensewas revoked for his courageous stance against the Vietnam War. A true Icon and inspiration to so many people, and rightly regarded as "The Greatest".

Blue J
Really sad...I just saw on the news last night that he'd been taken to the hospital, but I didn't know he was going to die...within hours. I love watching his old fights, on ESPN Classic...every once in awhile, I get in a mood for that. And to see his old interviews. He was a larger-than-life personality, and a tremendous human being. g under p
His greatest accomplishment by far was refusing to be drafted and sent to Vietnam. It takes a real man to do that. Just my opinion..... :) :)He had the money to flee but was man enough to stay ALL done While holding the heavyweight title which he to give up (done so in his prime fighting years) and also faced the ridicule he faced for changing his name and religion. I might have done the same.....btw he never was sent to Vietnam. I do have a question about Ali.....Did Ali change his religion to avoid the draft? I appear to have an ongoing discussion about whether or not that question was a fact.

Just my opinion..... :) :)Yeah, I agree. For a high profile person to stand his ground and say, "I am a man, and this is my life, and it doesn't belong to the state," took real guts, because he had a lot a stake and it did cost him. I hate it when people call him a "draft dodger" because he didn't dodge a damn thing. He straight up told them to go f**k themselves.

Xanadoood
I'm surprised this thread hasn't gotten more attention. We have can have countless discussions about college football and basketball, but one the most iconic athletes of our time passes, and no biggie. Cool. I feel lucky to have grown up during his era. As AnalogGrownup noted, the Ali era was loaded with amazing heavyweights.
