116. Lacuna Coil- Unleashed Memories

 

I am one of the few sticking up for the 21st century female fronted metal scene...but also I am only picking my favourite metal albums and this one is at the very top end of the list. Beautiful, combines elements of trip hop, gothic metal, middle eastern-tinged melodies and with songs like When A Dead Man Walks and 1:19, some of the best metal this band has ever written.

 

Melancholy, atmospheric and haunting, this has always been my second favourite album of all time, and in my opinion it is actually better than my favourite LC album (I just happen to have certain reasons for adoring Karmacode more...but only just).

This album got me back into trash, as they made a genre gone stale creative and interesting again .. I've always liked Voivod, and Vektor gets the vibe right

125. Neurosis - Enemy Of The Sun

 

Segue already mentioned Through Silver In Blood (1996) way earlier in the original list of 100, and while that is the "classic" and most well known Neurosis album, that album wouldn't have happened if it weren't for Enemy Of The Sun (1993) first. Taking the newfound experimentation of Souls At Zero (1992), Neurosis "signature sound" came full force onto this album. I can remember the first time I listened to this album, I was in my dorm room in the dark with a dimly lit lamp not knowing what to expect apart from it being metal and proceeded to have an eye opening experience. That first listen remains one of the most scariest, goosebump inducing listening experiences I've ever had. While this can fall under the sludge metal subgenre as there are strong sludge metal vibes here, there's no denying that the experimentation on this album laid the foundation for Neurosis to singlehandedly "invent" the subgenre of what is now known as "post-metal" with Through Silver In Blood.

I'm surprised this wasn't mentioned at all in the first 100. That epic banshee wail from Gillan on Child In Time, then of course there's Speed King.

 

It may not be a fully metal album, but moments like those above surely gave birth to the genre later on. Truly epic.

You can't go wrong with the first 3 Agalloch records to be honest. But I do find Ashes Against The Grain being my personal favorite as well.

To be fair it's not like you were rushing to put it in the top 100 last week either haha

Haha but I do agree...I think we are seeing several oversights from the top 100 that are very surprising.

It just fans being contrary to the tried-and-true. Nothing wrong with that... it's fun and, at times, eye opening.
