Caress Of Steel is a masterpiece! And I love it! It´s my favorite Rush album ever!!!

Every song on it is just great! My favorite is The Fountain Of Lamneth... oh how I love just to sit infront of the big speakers in my music room and listen to it really loud.

To me The Fountain Of Lamneth is better then 2112 (even thou 2112 is a masterpiece as well)!

Better than 2112? That's a tall order. I will have to give it another listen...it's been a very long time.

I've listened to it twice in the past few weeks, the more recent listen being just yesterday...I love it. I Think I'm Going Bald may be rather banal, lyrically, but I think we can all excuse one song on an album being less than stellar (and it still has a great riff, courtesy of Alex).

If Geddy has said that they were "pretty high" while making it, that may be the source of their dislike, more than anything. With hindsight, it could be that they look back on it as a sort of casualty of the era.

But I do wonder...if they were high while they recorded that album, in the summer of 1975, could they have gone completely straight and not been high at all when they recorded their first masterpiece epic, about six months later? Possible, but maybe not likely. So...I think drugs may not completely be the reason.

The tour supporting it surely stands out as a negative memory for them, yes.

But honestly...what other 22 year-olds can you name who composed and then recorded pieces as varied and complex as The Necromancer and The Fountain of Lamneth? There may be some...but not many.

It is a pretty remarkable album.

Agreed. And I actually love ITIGB. It rocks hard and the lyrics are fun! No one has to take is seriously, its just silly blokey humour and I love it.

Me too. It's ok to have some fun.

good atmosphere, raw music, they weren't so mathematical and up their own asses yet. great, fun album. sure, silly lyrics, but no sillier than talking trees or your ship getting sucked into a black hole

I'd tend to think that the person I communicated with (who was actually there when it happened) would be a little more accurate... just sayin'.

I think this settles it. I too now trust your source over cygnus-x1.net

I shot another note over to him last night, he said that he didn't remember Nuge ever opening for them... he said that it was mostly a three band show...a first band usually pretty bad. Rush, then Nugent. He said with three LOUD bands on the bill, most people left by the middle of Nugents set.

I never noticed they played Randy's Rodeo in SA on that tour. I always assumed the would have attempted to have played at Freeman, as Nugent generally does well here.

Anyway, the Randy's Rodeo gig makes the tour somewhat legendary. RR far predates my time here, but music fans know the history of the place. Trust me, it was a trashy dive then and it is a dive now (I think it is now a bingo hall). But RR was famous for two local shows. U2 played there in the early 80s before they made it big. The Sex Pistols played there on their one American tour. That show is known for the Cowboy Incident. Sid apparently yelled something impolite about cowboys. One cowboy took offense and came on stage to let Sid know. Sid smashed him on the head with his guitar. The cowboy was famously later interviewed on local TV and referred to the Sex Pistols as "sewer rats with guitars."

But, really, my understanding is that was apparently the kind of thing that happened at RR on a regular basis. The fact that Rush is part of that lore is pretty cool, but it doesn't say much for the quality of the CoS tour. The Down the Tubes thing is fitting.

Eh, Hold Your Fire doesn't do quite as much for me. It certainly has excellent moments, but there are three or four songs that bring the album down for me, including Tai Shan, of course.

In Beyond The Lighted Stage Alex tells about playing the just-finished CoS for Paul Stanley and seeing that he didn't like it. Then Alex said that their manager, critics and fans (who voted by not buying tickets to the point the band called it the "Down The Tubes" tour) apparently didn't get it either.

Neither did the record label, which started threatening to drop them if the next album didn't do better.

Or ask Geddy, who simply said, "We were pretty high when we made that record."

IMO the reason they don't like CoS is that it's by far the worst album of their career.

Not true, their career extended beyond Moving Pictures.

And every one of those post-MP albums is better than CoS.

I love how people are like OH MY GOD CARESS OF STEEL IS THE MOST UNDERRATED RUSH ALBUM EVER!!!!!

Uhhh.......Hold Your Fire? Amazing album except for the turd known as Tai Shan?

Hold Your Fire is a top two album for me. Caress Of Steel is number five.

And Tai Shan is one of my top picks from the album.

How is it that Tai Shan can't even get a break from people insulting it in a thread about Caress of Steel??

I don't get the hate. Its a good song!
