  1. 1. Rush 70s VS Queen 70s

Recommended Posts

I think Queen had a more original sound right from the beginning , whereas Rush took a bit to find theirs. If we are talking strictly 70s, Queen edges them out in that regard. But Rush continued to grow and develop.

They were much more prog when they started out and they became more radio friendly as the years went on.

I don't really like Queen, but occasionally I find myself enjoying their greatest hits box set when I am in the mood.

I know I am in the minority, but I have never particularly liked or admired Freddie Mercury's voice or stage performances. I respect his talent and influence, and the best of Queen is faultless and inspiring even to these ears, but they are not really a band that has ever had an impact on my life.

This is in spite of that thread ReGorLaTroy started with the intention of converting me!

But yeah, I just have never felt that Queen live up to the hype. But those who hear their greatness are many, and I respect that.

Completely agree. Strictly a greatest hits band for me, and even then I'll skip a lot of tracks.

I don't know. While I guess you could argue that they were a "greatest hits" band in the 80s, in the 70s they were very much an album band, and their hits worked much better in the context of the album as a whole (IMO)

I have had people look at me weird regarding my enjoyment of Rush and the voice of Geddy Lee, and I feel the same way regarding everyones admiration, and in some cases worship, of Mercury's voice.

I just don't like it, with the exception of The Show Must Go On. I think that song is spectacular, and I will admit to being intensely moved by Mercury every time I play.

But for me, the seventies belonged to Rush, Fleetwood Mac, ABBA and Springsteen.

I love Rush music, but Queen takes it by a country mile in this poll.

Yes queen fans are finally popping in. Taking Nothing Away from Rush.....but i feel this shouldn't even be a question.

I'm doing a queen 70's marathon tomorrow.

I think Rush was three musicians working as one band.

I think Queen was one band working as four musicians.

As far as albums go, Rush was cohesive, Queen was disjointed.

In the end, apples and oranges. Both benefit a well balanced rock music diet. :eyeroll:

Yeah, I have to give it to Queen if we are talking 70s. Those first 5 albums are just killer.

If we are taking overall career greatness, Rush takes it though IMO..nothing against queen..one of my favs..

Actually, if you consider Per Wav a 70s album, I could give it to them by a Geddy nose.

This was closer than it ought to be for me.

Rush (s/t), Fly By Night and Caress of Steel are easily my three least favorite Rush albums... but at the same time, 2112, Hemispheres and A Farewell to Kings easily rank among my most favorite Rush albums. Meanwhile, Queen was stellar throughout the 70s.

Ultimately, 2112 and Hemispheres won the argument for Rush. But if you lose either one of those albums, Queen wins.
