Best album pairs

You can pair off Queen albums. How can you NOT listen to these albums back-to-back:

Queen - A Night at the Opera and A Day at the Races

Yup. I had thought of several more than I listed -- Sgt Peppers/MMT, Power Windows/HYF, several REM and U2 pairings, etc. -- but this one was the most obvious.

Great ones I missed but someone else mentioned: Aerosmith Toys in the Attic and Rocks  , and XTC Apple Venus I and II (of course)

but I mean really there are a f***ing shitload of these

True, which is why I limited my list to those I really really like. Power Windows/HYF -- no way. Day at the Races/Night at the Opera -- have always loved A Night at the Opera, never cared so much for A Day at the Races (except for Tie Your Mother Down and Drowse). And so on.

Def Leppard - Pyromania & Hysteria

I would actually go with High N Dry and Pyromania. I think those two had more in common then Pyro did with Hysteria.

Someone already mentioned it, but the first album combo I thought of when I read the title was Ride The Lightning and Master Of Puppets from Metallica. There are very few album pairs that are better than that.

Yeah, these were the two I loved as a teenager (High N Dry and Pyromania).

I was obsessed High N Dry when it came out, but when Pyromania hit, every geek in school walked around the halls saying, "Gunter glieben glauten globen" (or whatever), and I distanced myself. Great writing, really catchy, just seemed a lot less hard rock to me.

kate bush - the dreaming, hounds of love

Absolutely. And also -- and maybe I'm breaking the rules, here -- Hounds of Love/Power Windows -- for the time of release, both physical and emotional.

kate bush - the dreaming, hounds of love

A girl I almost married listened to these two non-stop, not at all meaning to imply that was a bad thing in the least. Her love of the Fixx on the other hand...

I'm going to use Hounds of Love to break the rules also. For some reason, though Hounds of Love preceded it by four years, I've always thought it and Peter Murphy's Deep were a good pair. Just like the songs on Hounds of Love just flow from strength to strength, Deep is an unfaltering collection of strong songs, and the two share a common feel to me. An example:

XTC - Drums and Wires and Black Sea

Awesome! I came here to post this pair. These two have been favourites of mine for longer than I care to think about. What strange and wonderful albums. I listened to them both today for the first time in quite a while, and they still sound great!

Stratovarius's Polaris & Elysium

Stylistically similar and new for the band, and a route that only lasted for the two mentioned albums apparently, as in with their latest album, "Nemesis", they went very electronic.

Also, just check out the album artwork of each:

Deep Purple - Burn and Stormbringer; Perfect Strangers and House of Blue Light

Billy Joel - The Stranger and 52nd Street

It's funny that this particular discussion is here on TRF, because Rush is the only band I can think of whose albums all seem to be in pairs.

Rush and Fly By Night are very similar to one another, but no other albums.

Caress and 2112 are linked to one another, but not really to AFTK.

Kings and Hemispheres seem like a pair and quite different from PeW...

On and on, all the way through the '90s. It only breaks down when you compare Vapor Trails, Snakes and Arrows and CA.

Yeah, I view S&A as the sole deviant.

Rush is the only "strictly pairs" group that I can think of as well, but Jethro Tull is a pretty similar story. All of their (original studio) albums can be split up into distinct groups of two or three.

Guns n Roses - Use Your Illusion I and II.

Have these ever been released as a double album format, or exclusively as separate releases? Always been puzzled lol

You know, I don't know. I bought them at 8 am on the day of release on my way to class. They were two separate albums, although I would think everyone who owns one owns the other. #moneygrab
