FountainOfSyrinx
It just occurred to me that the NBA isn't a prominent discussion topic on this forum.. like the NHL or MLB is. But why? danielmclark
QUOTE (FountainOfSyrinx @ Mar 26 2012, 09:04 PM) why don't the people on here like it..?! Since you asked... I don't like basketball because it's boring. It seems, watching it, like the players don't try that hard. They get down the court, take a shot, make it, and then do it again in the other direction. Games get scored in the triple digits; it's not out of the ordinary to see a score of 102-106 for example. The games are 48 minutes long, so with 208 points on the board in my example, there are 2.16 baskets per minute. Maybe it's the rules, shot clocks or whatever, but it seems like there is far less concern when players score in basketball. It's up and down the court twice a minute, scoring more often than not. I just find it dull. Just an opinion.

softfilter
This use to be a heated topic around two years ago, plenty of people post, but the ones who did seamed to fade as the success of there favorite team faded. Me, Cavs- LeBron However Kyrie Irving has been fantastic and Cleveland not as bad as everyone expected. Oh, and Cavaliers D- League franchise my hometown Canton Charge in first place Eastern Conference holding on for a playoff spot..

DITTO.  The NBA is too full of egomaniac players, who have more control over the team than the coach. It's far worse than the other pro sports, IMO. It's too easy for one selfish player to ruin a team. And, the style of basketball they play isn't enjoyable to watch. College hoops are far superior. Cyclonus X-1
QUOTE (PhilCastro @ Mar 27 2012, 12:14 PM)I don't understand how this sport is so glorified in this country.. I know it takes a certain set of skills to be great at it, but what is so special about a 7 foot man jumping and throwing a ball into a basket undefended? The sport itself is very accessible. You don't need much equipment to play it--find a ball and something that can serve as a hoop and you're pretty much good to go. You don't need to have many other people (or even any other people) around in order to have a blast playing it. And it doesn't require much space: people get games going in their backyards and driveways all the time. It also probably helps the sport's popularity that there are so many "characters" involved in the pro game these days. People love discussing controversial antics as well as athletic feats. The fact that the stars' faces are always visible while they're playing (as opposed to being obscured by helmets or facemasks or whatever) helps viewers "get to know" and identify with them. And while a sport like hockey is about a million times better when viewed live, basketball actually translates very well to television. For me, of the "four major sports" in America, basketball has always been the most fun to play but the least fun to watch. As for why I don't enjoy watching it all that much, well, other posters have already cited some of the reasons: points come so very easily, the first three-and-a-half quarters often seem pointless, the last few minutes frequently devolve into stop-and-start free-throw events, etc. I'd much rather watch hockey, but I'm definitely in the minority on that (though perhaps not in these parts ). ILSnwdog
I hate hip hop, and the NBA is a big infomercial for everything that is hip hop. Plus I find it a tad boring when compared to the NHL and NFL. I'm trying to get into it since the Bulls are so damn good, and we have a player in Derrick Rose who is fun to watch.

CMWriter
I love basketball. It's my second-favourite sport to watch (next to American Football)... but only when it's live. I don't know why, I've just never been able to get into a basketball game when it's stuck on the small screen. But when I'm there in the stands at the court? I'd say it's so exciting! And it's much faster-paced than football. I guess part of the reason I don't get into pro ball is because we don't have a pro team here in Nebraska, but also for a lot of the aforementioned reasons... There's too much drama and commercialism; too much focus on just a couple players... NCAA is much better, IMO, but that's how I feel about most sports! But with football you can see strategy, you can see planning and execution. With basketball, they run in one direction take (and usually make) a shot, then run in the other direction. I know there is some planning and strategy in basketball because I've been told there is, but I'll be damned if I can see it in motion. It's the same action, up and down the court, twice a minute. Granted I only did basketball for a few years when I was younger, but it's more like quick thinking and drawing on the plays you already know and trying to make the best decision possible when the score's on the line. I still think football is amazingly fun to watch, especially live, just because there's really no place like Memorial Stadium in Lincoln, NE. Go Huskers! laughedatbytime
I'll be honest, as much sports as I watch (which is almost everything), I never watch the NBA. I much prefer the college game (even though the Kentucky Wildcats probably have a higher payroll than the Toronto Raptors), the intensity of both players and fans is far, far greater. In one sense, it's understandable, it would be impossible to play hard for 82 games. But the regular season is basically meaningless (though for some college teams it's kind of getting to be that way too). The other turnoff for the NBA is the atmosphere at games. Teams almost acknowledge that the game itself isn't enough to keep fans entertained, so they do all this over the top crap for player introductions and you can't have a timeout without some shitty dance music blaring. I can see minor league baseball teams doing that, but these games are supposed to mean something. When fans are more interested in a $5 tshirt than the game, the game can't really mean that much, can it? But the thing I hate most about the NBA is what it's done to the college game. Guys that could be great college players leave school early only to either spend most of their time on an NBA bench playing 10 minutes a game or wash out entirely. I don't begrudge them for going after the money, and I certainly don't think they should not be banned from doing so, but it does detract from the quality of the college game. FountainOfSyrinx
My Mavs return to South Beach for the first time since June 12th 2011.. when they hoisted up the O'Brien.. Â The same night that I had to ride home blindfolded and ear muffed so I could watch the game recorded because I was no place other than.. A RUSH CONCERT! Biggest ever conflict of interest in my life.. what the team I worship go for their first title in franchise history.. or watch the band that I could not live without in concert for the fifth time.. I obviously picked the concert.. but only because I had tickets back in January.. had I not had the tickets, who would've known what I had picked.. good times
