Some "magazine" interviewed Lars about hard rock being out of the mainstream. Now back in the day Metallica was heavy metal, thrash metal in the early years.

Quote

it definitely feels like what we're doing in hard rock in general is connecting with a lot of people. But in terms of the zeitgeist and overall mainstream culture, it doesn't feel like we're as much a part of the mainstream conversation as it has been in the past.

There was a time I thought Master of Puppets was the greatest rock song of all time. I'm more Hero of the Day now. As one matures, becomes more seasoned, you realize you can't live by metal alone. You need some Captain and Tennille in your diet. Now I'm not expecting Metallica do do Bon Jovi or Night Ranger but...

What are Metallica's best Night Ranger or Dokken type songs?

If I understand the premise correctly, we're looking for something guitar heavy, but not in a chord-crunching, pounding way, something more melodic with a centerpeice guitar solo, so it'd have to be some latter-day Metallica, probably from Load on . . . In fact, I think "Hero of the Day" is a pretty good choice. My recall of that era is dodgy.

Nothing Else Matters?

Yeah, I always thought that song was a better fit for a cheesy 80s hair band than it was for Metallica.

Fade to Black?

Mama Said?

My Friend of Misery?

No Leaf Clover, possibly the band's best song ever!

This is the good stuff!

The only song Night Ranger could probably pull off properly here is Mama Said and that song is trash.

Starting with the black album they slowed the bpm of most tracks and even wandered intentionally into the hard rock side from time to time.  There's some good examples posted already.  There would be an equally long list of "heavy" as "non-heavy" tracks since 1991.

The thing is that Night Ranger stuff is pretty upbeat and happy.

Metallica's stuff is not.  Not even close.

I'm gonna' go with Fuel from Re-Load.  Think it's most translatable to Night Rangers themes and sound.

I listened to that recently, which is to say reacquainted myself with it. I like it, I like it as a one off or occasional dabble. I would be disappointed if Mama Said became the new Metallica sound.

I'm still more metal than Tony.

So, what Night Ranger songs do we think would sound great Metallica-fied?

I'll start Sister Christian. In a minor key and in Drop D....

Me, treeduck and Segue.

Definitely, even with my diverse tastes, no one can dispute my committed relationship with many forms of metal

Why? I see no misleading recipes for Chicago style casserole or Dan Marino revisionist history. Just cool people discussing cranking rock and or roll.

Who would do Chicago's "Your're the Inspiration" better?

Night Ranger or Metalllica?

Where in the song would James Hetfield drop his deep throated “yeah-yeah”?

It just got even sadder.  The only thing that could bring it down further is some Van Hagar.

Which would you rather hear? Night Ranger or Metallica covering "Why Can't This Be Love".
