HemiBeers Posted December 20, 2018 Posted December 20, 2018 (edited) No Matt Cameron...fail Stewert Copeland...hasn't done shit on the drums beyond the Police. most overrated drummer ever. Charlie Watts...his entire career could be replaced by a drum machine. Max Weinberg -wouldn't be on the list if his nose wasn't stuck up Bruce's ass. Piece of shit list. Bhawk2112 Posted December 20, 2018 Posted December 20, 2018 The drummer not ranked high enough on this list is Ginger Baker... 1
Segue Myles Posted December 20, 2018 Posted December 20, 2018 I haven't looked at it. But if it doesn't include Phil Rudd, and have him in the top 3 and ahead of Neil, it's a bullshit list. Folks, Neil is NOT a good rock drummer. No feel. No groove. He a robot, programmed to jerk off all over the place. ... 1

One of my favorite drummers is Gavin Harrison of Porcupine Tree, but what do I know about drumming... Not much. I just love listening to Neil play... 1
Entre_Perpetuo Posted December 20, 2018 Posted December 20, 2018 How does Ringo Starr rank so high? Being the drummer of the most popular musical act of the last century might have a lot to do with it. It's not like he sucks anyways. 1

Depends on your definition of great. A great drummer imo knows when to play what, and always plays to serve the tune. Peart is surprisingly a great example of this, as his complex and machinelike style compliment the overall complexity of Rush's songs perfectly. Meanwhile, Ringo's extremely straightforward approach (with a slight quirk caused by a lefty playing a right handed kit setup) compliments the Beatles' very straightforward songs quite well. And when their songs aren't so straightforward, Ringo provides a simple backbone for the rest of the instruments to revolve around. I'm not saying the tunes would suck with a more technically skilled drummer, but I think Ringo's simplistic approach actually adds to their quality in a way many other drummers couldn't. Besides, I doubt you could find many drummers out there who are willing to bash his work, even the most technically proficient of them. Edited December 20, 2018 by Entre_Perpetuo 5

Besides, I doubt you could find many drummers out there who are willing to bash his work, even the most technically proficient of them. Yes, yes, yes! As I stated earlier drumming is not about playing the most complex patterns possible - unless you are in a band like Rush. The drummer is there to set the time and to complement, but not to overplay and overshadow the rest of the band. I think non-drummers have a different view of who is best. As a long time drummer, I have come to realize that I get the best feedback from other musicians when I keep a steady beat and again don't overplay. Musicians appreciate a rock steady drummer. Ringo Starr is on the list because he may be the most influential drummer of all time! I believe more kids took up drumming after seeing the Beatles on Ed Sullivan than any other time. His oyster black Ludwig kit remains the most iconic drum set ever. The original bass head used on Ed Sullivan sold for over $2 million and his actual first Ludwig kit sold for over $2.1 million. Ringo was perfect for the Beatles. His drumming on their albums (and as the story goes he didn't play on all songs), was exactly what those songs needed. Ringo Starr and Charlie Watts both belong on any greatest drummers lists. 2

"The drummer is there to set the time and to complement, but not to overplay and overshadow the rest of the band. . ." So, are you suggesting that Neil "overplayed" or "overshadowed" Alex and Ged? IMO, he did not. I think they were all complimentary to each other. If there was a drummer that overplayed or overshadowed the rest of the band, in my opinion, it would have been Portnoy in DT (although they all overplay)...

That’s not at all what they were suggesting. They mentioned that Rush with Neil are the exception to the “rule” that drumming isn’t about playing the most complex patterns in the previous sentence to the one you quoted. Don’t take people’s words out of context.
toymaker Posted December 21, 2018 Posted December 21, 2018 Don't suppose someone would care to list the drummers here so I don't have to go through the whole thing myself . . . I get irritated by those "they didn't know they were being photographed" and "why Hollywood won't hire ______ anymore" and "you won't believe what __________ looks like now" things. 3

If you enjoy his playing that’s enough. I’d say Gavin Harrison is better than many of those. I think as a technician Moon should be lower as should Starr and Grohl, but it isn’t just about technique hence why Peart doesn’t always come top. 2
