61) Law and Order: SVU

 

Although I don't watch it as much as I used to it's one of the longest running shows for a reason. It's maybe a bit samey after a while but it's very compelling and entertaining. If you are into this kind of thing you can really do no wrong with it.

Police/doctor/lawyer shows are a staple of television yet I've rarely watched any of them with any regularity. Off the top of my head I've seen a semi-decent amount of..... Police: Barney Miller and Starsky And Hutch in reruns after school and Hill Street Blues and Hunter semi-regularly when they were on. Doctor: uh, none. Lawyer: L.A. Law and Night Court.

The one-two punch of Emergency and Adam 12 was good back in the day. As for doctor shows, St. Elsewhere was pretty good.

I remember the commercials for when St. Elsewhere was going to premiere. Just a black screen or something. Was a cool marketing ploy at the time. Medical shows never interested me, unless General Hospital counts.

Breaking Bad's smarter little brother. It's slow, thoughtful, procedural pace sometimes works to the detriment of ratings; but gives it a chance to develop its characters in spades. Michael McKean's portrayal of Chuck McGill creates one of the most multi-dimensional, interesting, sympathetic antagonists I've ever seen. Bob Odenkirk carries the perfect balance of comedic elements and dramatic flair into the title role, while Jonathan Banks is spot on reprising the role of Mike from Breaking Bad. Personally, I like Better Call Saul better than Breaking Bad, and I think it's a wonderful addition to that universe.

Before MTV, before youtube, this was the only way to discover and see bands actually perform ..

 

I'm trying to find the exact date, but these shows were my introduction to Rush - one fateful weekend night in the wee hours of the morning, I saw the A Farewell To Kings clip .. Same for AC/DC and their incredible performance of Sin City on The Midnight Special in 1978 ..

JB, what is so cool is that I vividly remember seeing the Bohemian Rhapsody video back then too .. If it was '78, I was 10 or 11, and I remember being awake all by myself ... I was just starting to learn the guitar then as my Dad played, and he had guitars and was teaching me --

 

Anyways, at the end of the BR video, Brian May used his right index finger in an unusual way to tap those final few notes - and I was transfixed WHAT THE HELL ?? WHAT IS HE DOING

 

I remember the next day trying to explain to my Dad what I saw, and in doing so, I had to explain why I was awake at 2am

When it's condescending and unintentionally bad it's wildly entertaining (Next Stop, Nowhere). When it's sincere it's surprisingly good. Preachy naivete.

This was a spin off of Cheers and probably one of the best spinoff shows since the seventies. What made the show so great was the irony involved. Here we have Dr. Frasier Crane who was a so called expert at figuring out everyone else's problems but he couldn't figure out answers to his own problems which led to a lot of crazy situations. It made for great tv. Unfortunately, when the show came to an end you heard a lot about the Friends season finale but not much about Frasier's which is unfortunate and unfair considering Frasier started a year earlier. This show has unfortunately been somewhat forgotten over time but I watched it and liked it a lot when it was on.

Like Cheers it's an incredibly consistent show. The standard rarely dropped episode to episode.

Breaking Bad's smarter little brother. It's slow, thoughtful, procedural pace sometimes works to the detriment of ratings; but gives it a chance to develop its characters in spades. Michael McKean's portrayal of Chuck McGill creates one of the most multi-dimensional, interesting, sympathetic antagonists I've ever seen. Bob Odenkirk carries the perfect balance of comedic elements and dramatic flair into the title role, while Jonathan Banks is spot on reprising the role of Mike from Breaking Bad. Personally, I like Better Call Saul better than Breaking Bad, and I think it's a wonderful addition to that universe.

I am not sure if I like it better than BB and it still has a way to go but I do enjoy this show a great deal. It might be the show I look forward to watching the most right now. I basically agree with your whole post.

Is this the first cartoon mentioned? So be it. This was Marvel's answer to DC's Superfriends. They took their cash cow in Spidey and teamed him with an unknown character (outside of comic fans) in Iceman and a totally new one in Firestar. The art was good for its day, the voices fit, and the villain & hero appearances were fun.

This was a spin off of Cheers and probably one of the best spinoff shows since the seventies. What made the show so great was the irony involved. Here we have Dr. Frasier Crane who was a so called expert at figuring out everyone else's problems but he couldn't figure out answers to his own problems which led to a lot of crazy situations. It made for great tv. Unfortunately, when the show came to an end you heard a lot about the Friends season finale but not much about Frasier's which is unfortunate and unfair considering Frasier started a year earlier. This show has unfortunately been somewhat forgotten over time but I watched it and liked it a lot when it was on.

My 11yo son is obsessed with the show. we watched Cheers last year, and he enjoyed it, but he thinks Frasier is better. I do, as well.
