And as much as I love The Scorpions, Queen and esp Thin Lizzy, I don't think those live albums were great

Tokyo Tapes is actually disappointing IMHO

:wtf: That prompts some questions man.

What's disappointing about Tokyo Tapes?

We'll Burn The Sky? In Trance? Fly To The Rainbow? In Search Of The Piece Of Mind? He's A Woman, She's A Man? Polar Nights? Dark Lady? Steamrock Fever? Pictured Life? Speedy's Coming?

What's not to love?

I had a feeling this might happen

I love the Scorpions, esp the Uli era ... but there is something about that recording - the technical aspect - that I feel lacks the impact that the band possessed .. I think the mix leaves a lot to be desired - the overall recording actually ..

It doesn't take the band up a notch as a live album should

The band doesn't sound LOUD

Maybe you should crank up the volume. :P

Have you heard the 2015 remaster? That one is really an improvement compared to the original album.

How the West was Won. Late to the party but made a huge entrance. Nothing against TSRTS which is great/indispensably in its own way. Edited by Rutlefan

I have to disagree with Kiss Alive and Van Halen Right Here Right Now. By all accounts, they're both studio albums.

oh stop

There was nothing done with ALIVE! that wasn't done on other albums

In fact, the versions of "This Kid's" and "Mother Mary" that appeared on Strangers In The Night were complete studio recordings - no audience at all .. The songs weren't even played on the tour and they were recorded at The Record Plant studio ...

If you want to compare, here are the soundboard recordings from ALIVE!

They actually sound better

Why are these 70's live albums so good? Tons of stuff and most of it is absolutely great. Best decade in rock!!!

Yeah, as a kid growing up in the '70s I thought music was SUPPOSED to be live with the studio albums being simply warm-ups with some extra tracks.

From the Strangers In The Night Remaster Edition liner notes:

There was, however, some sleight of hand involved. In the first week of November 1978, the band convened at the Record Plant to record two tracks from scratch: "Mother Mary" and "This Kid's", neither which had been played on the tour. I mixed them in with crowd noise" (producer) Nevison says, "and I remember being proud of the fact that you couldn't tell which songs were live and which were not"

And yet Kiss Alive! remains the golden standard all live albums have to live up to.

I disagree. I actually think Kiss Alive II is a better live album to be honest.

Just listened to that one and since nobody has mentioned it yet...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WDTBPXs0BrQ

Great songs and concert footage from the movie.

Celebration Day was left off the original soundtrack. Not sure why.

I was at one of the two '73 shows at MSG and the premier of the movie in NYC in '76. The movie theater was outfitted with quad sound and it was loud !!! Just like being at their show.
