Just post/introduce one live album that you really love...Thank you. :hail:

I know this thread should start with ATWAS, or maybe a hundred other great live albums, but I decided to go with an outsider.

A great live document from the year 1977 and if you're in the mood to listen to a great Rock'n'Roll party, this is the one for you.

It contains the best show introduction ever... :givebeer:

...Is there anybody out there that wants to rock?...

...Is there anybody out there that wants to roll?...

...and is there anybody out there that wants to boogie?...

...tonight...L(o)ive...from The Apollo...Glasgow...

...will you welcome...the magnificent...STATUS QUO...

1. Grateful Dead - Europe '72

I've read a lot from critics saying it's the best live album of all time, but I disagree. It's a great showcase of the Dead during their transition from Pigpen to Keith and Donna. It's very interesting hearing this album because you have such great interplay between Pigpen and Keith on a good majority of the album, but no one makes it a point to really listen closely for it. I personally think the Dead had their first major peak in 1977, but it's all subjective.

2. Pink Floyd - Pulse

I remember listening to this on my father's old stereo system when I was maybe 4 or 5 years old. Obviously there was still some contempt being felt at the time towards Gilmour and company for continuing as Pink Floyd, but this is about as Pink as Floyd could have gotten without Roger Waters. The material they showcased from A Momentary Lapse Of Reason and Division Bell really shines, even though the former could have been represented more (especially considering set lists from this tour varied with a LOT of material from that album). I think Pulse also has the definitive version of Hey You, at least from out of all the bootleg versions I've heard. The screams at the climax of the song are just bone chilling! On top of all of this, you also get a full performance of Dark Side of the Moon, which hadn't been done for at least 20 years before this tour took place. Very Pink, Very Floyd.

3. Peter Gabriel - Plays Live

Gabriel as a solo artist never ceases to inspire, especially considering this was during the height of his experimental phase as a solo artist. Stuff like Intruder. The Rhythm of the Heat, and San Jacinto really do shine as performance songs. Peter Gabriel is also, from my perspective, a very emotional artist from the way he structures his lyrics and phrasings.

4. Yes - Keys to Ascension 1 and 2

Honestly, these are the most underrated live albums Yes ever put out from any era. The material they have on both volumes is just so much better than anything they had done up to that point.

5. Genesis - Seconds Out

Genesis were so tight at this point. Seconds Out doesn't really do this lineup of Genesis true justice. Look for any of the numerous bootleg soundboards that have surfaced. Such a shame that Steve left when he did.

I notice that the Allman Brothers At Fillmore East was only mentioned once, and not discussed at all. For shame, music lovers. :tsk:

Others:

Miles Davis Quintet- Live at the Plugged Nickel

James Brown- Love Power Peace (L'Olympia, Paris, 1971)

Charles Mingus- Live at Antibes, 1960

Bill Evans- Sunday at the Village Vanguard

I'll think of more. But I thought some more jazz and soul ought to be represented here, and these were the first, off the top of my head.

Bill Evans Trio - Waltz for Debby/Sunday at the Village Vanguard - they are meant to be a pair, as they are part of the same set of concerts.

Weather Report - 8:30

John Coltrane - Afro Blue Impressions

Charles Mingus - Town Hall Concert

Bill Withers - Live at Carnegie Hall

Earth, Wind & Fire - Gratitude

I have never heard that Miles set. 1967 was a very interesting transitional time, and a largely unheralded year for Miles, which that set helps to remedy. I need to get that.

Mingus' Town Hall Concert is outta sight! I'll pull that one out sometime later this week.

I had forgotten that Waltz For Debby was a live recording. (And I just listened to it a couple of months ago!).

The "Bootleg" series for Miles are really wonderful thus far. I've not heard all of them yet, but Vol 1 (Europe 1967) and the complete Fillmore 1970 are KILLER. Highly recommended :)

Indeed. So many great jazz drummers...but I'd say he and Max Roach were the earliest who really innovated with the drums as a lead instrument. Blakey, Roach, and Tony Williams were the vanguard of that, in my opinion.
