I don't recall attacking anything here in a demeaning, excessively negative, or hostile way (spaghetti lee gets a pass...) Spaghetti didn't get a pass. A couple of weeks ago he was suspended for two days, and he had to change his avatar. He leans more towards irreverent now, as opposed to trollish. Trollish might describe you right now, however.6 points

The hostility shown to people suffering from clinical depression appals me. Does it ever occur to people that if it was simply a matter of "pulling yourself together" then depression would be rare? Having suffered from depression for many years, suffered the sneering and the accusations of mental and or physical frailty, the incomprehension that "someone like me" could be so weighed down, the quizzical "what have you got to be depressed about?" I know how and why someone might take their own life. It never seems to occur to some people that if you can wonder why someone rich, successful and famous can take their own life you have the problem of depression in a nutshell. There is no real reason that anyone can give for why they suffer from depression or why exactly they are depressed at any given time and that is the problem. It is a bio-chemical problem. It's been a long time since I've been on here, and wanted to take this opportunity to apologize to someone on here. I figured I could create a thread for people to apologize "anonymously", to just get it out of their system without involving others, or perhaps say sorry for all to see. Use this thread as you see fit. So, I'll start. To the person I used to talk to frequently (you know who you are), I'm sorry. My behavior was totally inappropriate and out of line. It's been hanging over my head for some time, and wanted to let you know that I realize I was wrong.4 points

I thought I never wanted children, or even wanted to marry, until I unexpectedly met the man who I sincerely believe is my soulmate. I will say, they certainly were worth the wait, and I am so glad I never committed suicide. I have attempted to end my life several times, actually, and the tragic loss of Robin Williams is proof that suicide isn’t the answer. You may believe your entire world has come crashing down before you, especially if you are already struggling with depression, or another health related obstacle. I have been there, many, many times. I promise you, this is not the end, but the beginning of a new chapter. I never would have met the love of my life, or finally attained another job. Who knows what the future holds, you know? I was just hired today, after searching for years. Best word of advice - don’t give up, no matter what. I thought my life would forever be a miserable existence, but I was terribly wrong. Anything can happen, right? I have no intention of changing the topic, but I wanted to share what was on my mind today.4 points

Yeah good point. If it were only up to him, I'm sure they would already be retired Oh, I doubt that. People like to give him crap for being introverted towards his fans and touring but there's this: It was ultimately his decision that Vapor Trails-present exists. He could've decided to never come back after Test For Echo and the dark days in the late 90's. Then if you go to Clockwork Angels he wrote a full-fledged story and delivered some of the best drum work he's ever done. He went all out on that album. That doesn't sound like a man who's wanted to retire for many years.4 points

Well, there will always be worry and speculation with any act that's been around for a long time. I don't think the questions are meant to be critical or malicious in any way. Fans do get worried, and when that awful time comes they do grieve. I think it's good that people care about those who have given them joy for years.3 points

I've given it due reflection. You can raise objections, but for me "Show Don't Tell" is the "least good" opening song.3 points

They're a work IN progress. They'll make music for years to come...touring?!? That's another matter. Friendship is deep. They love each other and they still have that creative spark, as evidenced in CA. I say a couple more albums. Geddy's voice in studio is so damn good right now3 points

12 August 2014 Tuesday Flamingos There are 6 species of flamingo found in warm, watery regions on several continents. They favor environments like estuaries and saline or alkaline lakes. Considering their appearance, flamingos are surprisingly fluid swimmers, but really thrive on the extensive mud flats where they breed and feed. Their bent bills allow them to feed on small organisms—plankton, tiny fish, fly larvae, and the like. In muddy flats or shallow water, they use their long legs and webbed feet to stir up the bottom. They then bury their bills, or even their entire heads, and suck up both mud and water to access the tasty morsels within. A flamingo's beak has a filterlike structure to remove food from the water before the liquid is expelled. Shrimplike crustaceans are responsible for the flamingo's pink color. The birds pale in captivity unless their diet is supplemented. Flamingos live and feed in groups called flocks or colonies. They find safety in numbers, which helps to protect individual birds from predators while their heads are down in the mud. Flamingos also breed while gathered in groups. Once mating is complete, a pair takes turns incubating their single egg. Young flamingos are born gray and white and do not turn pink for two years. In years when wetlands and pools are dry and food scarce, flamingos may not breed. NOTE: This isn't the Journal of Ornithology, so I didn't bother labeling each species pictured below. :P http://i.imgur.com/vu4ZqiB.jpg3 points

Depression doesn't work that way. Depression doesn't work that way. It doesn't discriminate - "from the penthouse to the alleyway". I have too much close experience with it, sadly. The brain is just another organ, and like the heart, the liver, the stomach, whatever - it can be affected by chronic conditions. Williams had sought treatment and no doubt had some of the best doctors working with him. But in the end it is a condition that is still poorly understood. I have empathy and will be glad to learn more concerning the condition. The short of it is that bipolar and depression are a biochemical imbalance, and a real illness, not simply a state of mind or attitude. What's unfortunate is that the word depression CAN be used in the clinical sense (there is a biochemical/brain disorder) AND in the other sense of "I feel depressed". Much to many folks dismay, treatment including counseling and pharmaceutical treatments dont always cure depression. To cope many people, not just celebrities, self medicate with alcohol or other things like drugs. Did RW use alcohol and cocaine over the decades to self medicate, or did he just abuse those things like anyone else might? We don't know. Did he commit suicide because of untreatable and unbearable depression, or withdraw from drugs/alcohol/ other pharma? We don't know. It could be a combo of all of it. The only point, given my personal experience, is that clinical depression is not something one can simply "get over" with an attitude adjustment, its an illness that often is very stubborn to treat.3 points

I’ve also had personal experience with depression, and I can tell you there’s nothing worse. I think its cruelest symptom is the death of all hope. You felt terrible during every moment of today, as you did yesterday and the day before, and you know you’re going to continue to feel this way tomorrow and for the foreseeable future. You see no end to your suffering, no hope that your emotional pain will EVER go away. There are many times you feel you cannot tolerate another SECOND of it, yet you know you have hours, weeks, and months of this feeling ahead, perhaps even a LIFETIME of it. If you can’t understand why someone would commit suicide in that state, then I failed to explain it. Too many times our society uses “depressed” and “sad” interchangeably, and they are so NOT the same thing. As a result of this mix-up of terms, “depressed” has become an insufficient word to describe the severity and totality of this awful emotional state. Fools think sufferers can just “snap out of it.” They can’t, and it doesn’t matter how much money, fame, or love the person has. A personal anecdote: several times I tried renting a movie to “make myself feel better,” but this was a futile task. Things which were dark and sad made my feelings worse, naturally, but so did so-called “happy” things. No comedic movie or time spent with loved ones cheered me; they were just reminders that I SHOULD be happy but I wasn’t… and that’s depressing, so right back to the “no hope for the future” feeling. Besides, “happiness” is an illusion and the “happy people” around you are just delusional, see? You actually believe this unrelentingly dark outlook you have is the world as it REALLY is, and anyone who sees it differently is just kidding themselves. The first step towards recovery is believing that recovery is possible: there IS hope, and you won’t always feel like you did this month or this year. It can be so hard to see any hope, though.3 points

US actress Lauren Bacall 'dies at 89' http://news.bbcimg.co.uk/media/images/76907000/jpg/_76907772_76907767.jpg American actress Lauren Bacall has died at the age of 89, according to reports. Her Hollywood career spanned seven decades, with a memorable debut aged 19 opposite her future husband, Humphrey Bogart, in To Have and Have Not. More than 50 years later, The Mirror Has Two Faces earned her a Golden Globe Award and an Academy Award nomination. Born in Brooklyn, New York, in in 1924, she went on to become one of cinema's biggest stars, best known for her husky voice and beauty. A Twitter account of the Bogart estate, run by Bacall's son, tweeted: "With deep sorrow, yet with great gratitude for her amazing life, we confirm the passing of Lauren Bacall." Bogart was awarded an honorary Oscar in 2009 in recognition of "her central place in the golden age of motion pictures". Born Betty Joan Perske, Bacall took her a variation of her mother's last name after her parents divorced. Her first film performance, as the tough and tender dame in To Have and Have Not, became one of the most powerful debuts in film history. The film featured her legendary lines: "You don't have to act with me, Steve. You don't have to say anything and you don't have to do anything. Oh, maybe just whistle. You know how to whistle, don't you, Steve? You just put your lips together and... blow. She continued her on-screen partnership with Bogart in Key Largo, The Big Sleep and Dark Passage after the couple were married in 1945.2 points

This forum's use of the term "ninny" to describe those who love The Garden is a way of reclaiming that word from others (*cough*Sheldon*cough*) who originally used it in a disparaging way. We are proud ninnies. A badge of honor..... :madra: Yeah! :madra:2 points

It's possible if Robin hadn't been a depressive he wouldn't be quite the manic and energised personality that we saw. If he'd been perfectly happy he probably wouldn't feel the need or be able to explode into those dizzy comic monologues we all enjoyed.2 points

Fans do get worried, and when that awful time comes they do grieve. I think it's good that people care about those who have given them joy for years. I don't disagree with you at all about that; I care about them, too. They are, and have been, the most important band in my life. All I meant was that the general tone of this thread seems to be about how far the band has gone downhill over the past few years. I'm of the opinion (and I know some others here are, too) that we're fortunate to still have them at all. And I happen to think they're still doing really, really well. Not just for their age, but for any band.2 points

I am sorry for being so superior to all you guys. I wish you all the best, but I cannot help you, as you are all beneath me. Accept my humble apology, I know you all admire and respect my wonderful qualities, but find it within yourselves to move on, and live your lives as free people! Maybe, if you are lucky, you might become like me, and then we can speak. Until then, I am sorry, but I am just to dam good for all of you guys. lolsies2 points

If the band were of the opinion that Geddy couldn't endure another tour (let alone two or three), then I don't think they would continue to do what they do. And whatever they do next, they ought to be able to do without a chorus of people wondering if they can still hack it. It's amazing...they make new music and tour consistently, almost without stopping, for 10-11 years, and then they take a break for one year, and all this starts up. It's inevitable with some people, I suppose. "What if Geddy can't do it anymore?", "What if Neil crashes his bike?"...Neil is a big boy, and he can take care of himself. And in 2013, I went to my first Rush show since the Counterparts tour, and Geddy sounded flippin' great. So there.2 points

Good man, It takes a lot of responsibility to own pet. You made a wise choice. You have to really want one and be prepared to take care of it. The time, money involved. Same with children. It changes your whole life and you have to be committed to what you have decided to do. I wouldn't even be able to have a pet. Think it's settled then, no kids for me :D Why no pets/kids? Is it where you live? Either way, at least your making a choice that is responsible. Kids, because I have too much unsolved. Dogs, because I'd have to feed them and walk them. http://territrespicio.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/SweetBrown.jpg Edit: I love kids and animals, but I want my life to be about me and not them :) Honest selfishness, I love it!! :7up: :haz: You need a little selfishness every now and then* *I reserve the right to change my position along the way ;) And it's a good thing, Something that's needed more. OK...I eliminated the epics, because that's just not fair. La Villa, NatiSci, Lamneth...they are much more than just closing songs. That being done... I ended up choosing Mystic Rhythms. It closes that collection of songs perfectly.2 points

I grew up around it. The women in my family battle with mood and other disorders. It's horrible to watch, and I feel for those that have to live with it. I remember my mom telling me once about an unshakeable feeling of despair, even in the face of a hopeful reality. She tried self-medication, of course, but alcoholism only made things worse. She was hospitalized a few times, even attempted to take her own life a couple of times, but failed. She made it through all this to her fifties and manages very well these days, having somehow found peace through renewed religious faith. I am thankful every day that I've been blessed with a generally positive demeanor. Having grown up around what I described above, I know that my life is charmed. I have a beautiful, loving wife, two wonderful children, and the physical and mental health to enjoy them. Anything else life brings my way is a bonus.2 points

I agree. Creativeness isn't just a switch you can flip on and off. I think there will be new music long after the touring is over.2 points

Two thumbs up. That song is not usually on my radar much, but you motivated me to go back and soak it in a little more. The people who were clamoring for it last tour, aren't crazy after all.2 points

Growing up, I was thinking that I wanted to have kids. But certainly wanted to get married first, settle down, see the world, etc.. and then have kids. But, at the age of 24, I got my girlfriend pregnant. At the time, I was hoping she would get an abortion, but I knew it was her decision and I would support her. So, we got the shotgun wedding and then the greatest thing in my life happened. The birth of my oldest sweetie changed my life for the best. Almost overnight, I matured and became a man. Fast forward 17 years, several kids later, and a divorce, my kids are my heart and soul. If they would only listen to good music.2 points
