  1. I don't recall attacking anything here in a demeaning, excessively negative, or hostile way (spaghetti lee gets a pass...) Spaghetti didn't get a pass. A couple of weeks ago he was suspended for two days, and he had to change his avatar. He leans more towards irreverent now, as opposed to trollish. Trollish might describe you right now, however.

  5. Xanadu...not even close. It has an otherworldly presence that transports you to another time and place. Natural Science is ok, but a bit too preachy and in your face...and the vocals aren't as good, and the slow part stinks.

  6. The hostility shown to people suffering from clinical depression appals me. Does it ever occur to people that if it was simply a matter of "pulling yourself together" then depression would be rare? Having suffered from depression for many years, suffered the sneering and the accusations of mental and or physical frailty, the incomprehension that "someone like me" could be so weighed down, the quizzical "what have you got to be depressed about?" I know how and why someone might take their own life. It never seems to occur to some people that if you can wonder why someone rich, successful and famous can take their own life you have the problem of depression in a nutshell. There is no real reason that anyone can give for why they suffer from depression or why exactly they are depressed at any given time and that is the problem. It is a bio-chemical problem. Simple.

  8. It's been a long time since I've been on here, and wanted to take this opportunity to apologize to someone on here. I figured I could create a thread for people to apologize "anonymously", to just get it out of their system without involving others, or perhaps say sorry for all to see. Use this thread as you see fit. So, I'll start. To the person I used to talk to frequently (you know who you are), I'm sorry. My behavior was totally inappropriate and out of line. It's been hanging over my head for some time, and wanted to let you know that I realize I was wrong.

  14. I thought I never wanted children, or even wanted to marry, until I unexpectedly met the man who I sincerely believe is my soulmate. I will say, they certainly were worth the wait, and I am so glad I never committed suicide. I have attempted to end my life several times, actually, and the tragic loss of Robin Williams is proof that suicide isn’t the answer. You may believe your entire world has come crashing down before you, especially if you are already struggling with depression, or another health related obstacle. I have been there, many, many times. I promise you, this is not the end, but the beginning of a new chapter. I never would have met the love of my life, or finally attained another job. Who knows what the future holds, you know? I was just hired today, after searching for years. Best word of advice - don’t give up, no matter what. I thought my life would forever be a miserable existence, but I was terribly wrong. Anything can happen, right? I have no intention of changing the topic, but I wanted to share what was on my mind today.

  15. Yeah good point. If it were only up to him, I'm sure they would already be retired Oh, I doubt that. People like to give him crap for being introverted towards his fans and touring but there's this: It was ultimately his decision that Vapor Trails-present exists. He could've decided to never come back after Test For Echo and the dark days in the late 90's. Then if you go to Clockwork Angels he wrote a full-fledged story and delivered some of the best drum work he's ever done. He went all out on that album. That doesn't sound like a man who's wanted to retire for many years.

  22. I was just about to pop in Rush in Rio just for Natural Science. I'll watch the R30 one too to see which one is better. The other one's on Snakes, not R30. The Snakes one is good too and Alex's guitar sounds better on Snakes and Arrows Live IMO. But as always, that crowd in RiR is too good to pass up.

  25. Well, there will always be worry and speculation with any act that's been around for a long time. I don't think the questions are meant to be critical or malicious in any way. Fans do get worried, and when that awful time comes they do grieve. I think it's good that people care about those who have given them joy for years.

  30. 12 August 2014 Tuesday Flamingos There are 6 species of flamingo found in warm, watery regions on several continents. They favor environments like estuaries and saline or alkaline lakes. Considering their appearance, flamingos are surprisingly fluid swimmers, but really thrive on the extensive mud flats where they breed and feed. Their bent bills allow them to feed on small organisms—plankton, tiny fish, fly larvae, and the like. In muddy flats or shallow water, they use their long legs and webbed feet to stir up the bottom. They then bury their bills, or even their entire heads, and suck up both mud and water to access the tasty morsels within. A flamingo's beak has a filterlike structure to remove food from the water before the liquid is expelled. Shrimplike crustaceans are responsible for the flamingo's pink color. The birds pale in captivity unless their diet is supplemented. Flamingos live and feed in groups called flocks or colonies. They find safety in numbers, which helps to protect individual birds from predators while their heads are down in the mud. Flamingos also breed while gathered in groups. Once mating is complete, a pair takes turns incubating their single egg. Young flamingos are born gray and white and do not turn pink for two years. In years when wetlands and pools are dry and food scarce, flamingos may not breed. NOTE: This isn't the Journal of Ornithology, so I didn't bother labeling each species pictured below. :P http://i.imgur.com/vu4ZqiB.jpg

  32. Depression doesn't work that way. Depression doesn't work that way. It doesn't discriminate - "from the penthouse to the alleyway". I have too much close experience with it, sadly. The brain is just another organ, and like the heart, the liver, the stomach, whatever - it can be affected by chronic conditions. Williams had sought treatment and no doubt had some of the best doctors working with him. But in the end it is a condition that is still poorly understood. I have empathy and will be glad to learn more concerning the condition. The short of it is that bipolar and depression are a biochemical imbalance, and a real illness, not simply a state of mind or attitude. What's unfortunate is that the word depression CAN be used in the clinical sense (there is a biochemical/brain disorder) AND in the other sense of "I feel depressed". Much to many folks dismay, treatment including counseling and pharmaceutical treatments dont always cure depression. To cope many people, not just celebrities, self medicate with alcohol or other things like drugs. Did RW use alcohol and cocaine over the decades to self medicate, or did he just abuse those things like anyone else might? We don't know. Did he commit suicide because of untreatable and unbearable depression, or withdraw from drugs/alcohol/ other pharma? We don't know. It could be a combo of all of it. The only point, given my personal experience, is that clinical depression is not something one can simply "get over" with an attitude adjustment, its an illness that often is very stubborn to treat.

  33. My grandpa drove a tow truck at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds racetrack for years. This meant that I grew up getting to spend a lot of time in the infield at the facility during races. I spent time around names like Dick Trickle, Dave Marcis, Scott Wimmer, even the occasional Rusty Wallace or Mark Martin. There was a long stretch of time through the 90s where I think I was at every race at that track... Around this time of year in 1998, I was 12 years old. I was watching the race, especially following Adam Petty, the grandson of NASCAR legend Richard Petty. Adam was touted as the next big thing, a driver to watch... and I was very excited to get to see him race. Petty was running toward the front of the field, and pulled into the pits to change right side tires. When the front tire changer ran around the front end of the car, the air hose hung up under the front bumper. so he quickly got down on his belly, and reached under the car to free it up... ...and that's when the jack dropped. There I was, sitting in the grandstands, not more then 100 feet away. Watching intently, as the jack dropped on that poor guy, and the car ran him over, dragging his body a short distance down pit road, before coming loose and tumbling to a stop. It is one of the defining moments in my life. It is the only time I have ever actually witnessed death. And to a kid 12 years old, it scared me and broke my heart. I think about that jackman from time to time. I don't know who he is, or anything about him. I don't know if he's still in the business, or if he continued on after that race. But I think about that poor man. He has to live knowing that his error killed someone. I know what it's like to lose a friend. But I can't imagine the pain that someone would feel knowing that they were responsible for it. I think about Adam Petty... who tragically died on track in New Hampshire 2 years later. I wonder how he felt, knowing- through no fault of his own- that he ran over his team member. When I watched this accident with Stewart and Ward Saturday night, I was transformed right back to that kid in the grandstands. And I've shed quite a few tears thinking about this in the past few days. I am a member, however insignificant, of the racing community. I've actually spent time turning wrenches, and unloading cars off trailers. I understand this world, and more importantly, I feel for its participants. We lost one of our own on Saturday night, and I can't help but feel like we've got another one in the balance. I've never met Tony Stewart, but I've been there to watch him race on multiple occasions. I know the kind of guy he is, and I can't even imagine the pain he's in right now. I'm hurting to think about this incident. This isn't the time to play the blame game, to score cheap points, or to otherwise armchair quarterback the situation. It's just a terrible, terrible tragedy. I really wish people would think about this for what it is, rather than putting down things that they don't understand.

  34. I’ve also had personal experience with depression, and I can tell you there’s nothing worse. I think its cruelest symptom is the death of all hope. You felt terrible during every moment of today, as you did yesterday and the day before, and you know you’re going to continue to feel this way tomorrow and for the foreseeable future. You see no end to your suffering, no hope that your emotional pain will EVER go away. There are many times you feel you cannot tolerate another SECOND of it, yet you know you have hours, weeks, and months of this feeling ahead, perhaps even a LIFETIME of it. If you can’t understand why someone would commit suicide in that state, then I failed to explain it. Too many times our society uses “depressed” and “sad” interchangeably, and they are so NOT the same thing. As a result of this mix-up of terms, “depressed” has become an insufficient word to describe the severity and totality of this awful emotional state. Fools think sufferers can just “snap out of it.” They can’t, and it doesn’t matter how much money, fame, or love the person has. A personal anecdote: several times I tried renting a movie to “make myself feel better,” but this was a futile task. Things which were dark and sad made my feelings worse, naturally, but so did so-called “happy” things. No comedic movie or time spent with loved ones cheered me; they were just reminders that I SHOULD be happy but I wasn’t… and that’s depressing, so right back to the “no hope for the future” feeling. Besides, “happiness” is an illusion and the “happy people” around you are just delusional, see? You actually believe this unrelentingly dark outlook you have is the world as it REALLY is, and anyone who sees it differently is just kidding themselves. The first step towards recovery is believing that recovery is possible: there IS hope, and you won’t always feel like you did this month or this year. It can be so hard to see any hope, though.

  36. Horsepucks. Most big time circle track racers (NASCAR, USAC. ARCA, Indy Car, etc). evolved by starting with go-karts, to midget racers, to sprint cars, to the Big Leagues. Some of them still do an occasional sprint car race when the schedule fits. And some of them Jumped genres. Jeez, Mario Andretti did USAC stock cars, Indy cars. Formula 1. FIA GT (Daytona, LeMans, etc.), and you can bet if he had time, he was tooling around some little "bullring" track near Nazareth. Agreed. Racing is a way of life to these guys... Also, for smaller venues, having a star like Tony Stewart is a HUGE draw. It brings money to the smaller teams by bringing bigger crowds, and bigger purses. It would not be good for racing to have the big guys abandon the local tracks of the country. Racing doesn't have academic institutions to back it up... You don't have kids racing as part of a high school or college program. The ladder to the top needs to be held up by both ends.

  39. I grew up around it. The women in my family battle with mood and other disorders. It's horrible to watch, and I feel for those that have to live with it. I remember my mom telling me once about an unshakeable feeling of despair, even in the face of a hopeful reality. She tried self-medication, of course, but alcoholism only made things worse. She was hospitalized a few times, even attempted to take her own life a couple of times, but failed. She made it through all this to her fifties and manages very well these days, having somehow found peace through renewed religious faith. I am thankful every day that I've been blessed with a generally positive demeanor. Having grown up around what I described above, I know that my life is charmed. I have a beautiful, loving wife, two wonderful children, and the physical and mental health to enjoy them. Anything else life brings my way is a bonus.

  41. Sprint Car driver Mark Tychonowicz: "i have driven these cars, the right side board on the top wing will block out an entire car let alone a person standing there,i now work on the 45 car in the video and the driver said he just saw him at the last second and just missed him,Tony had even less time to react to the situation.people in the stands or watching this video have no idea how fast these thing happen and how limited our view is inside the car.it was a very bad turn of events that happened but we all know the dangers involved in the sport we love." A Sprint Car driver from that race, Cory Sparks: "From what I saw, Tony did everything in his power to turn down away from Kevin to avoid him, People say that they heard the engine rev up and he gassed it. In a sprint car, the only way to steer is you steer with the rear wheels as much as you do the steering wheel. In my opinion, what he did was he gassed it to turn down away from him,"

  42. Growing up, I was thinking that I wanted to have kids. But certainly wanted to get married first, settle down, see the world, etc.. and then have kids. But, at the age of 24, I got my girlfriend pregnant. At the time, I was hoping she would get an abortion, but I knew it was her decision and I would support her. So, we got the shotgun wedding and then the greatest thing in my life happened. The birth of my oldest sweetie changed my life for the best. Almost overnight, I matured and became a man. Fast forward 17 years, several kids later, and a divorce, my kids are my heart and soul. If they would only listen to good music.

  48. So the real agenda shows. You dislike the guy, so you paint him as a killer. The real issue is a guy was killed under yellow (unheard of in even the most rookie of series) by one of the most talented drivers in history. That can only happen when both guys are doing something they have no business doing. What happened is beyond ridiculous. I've always liked Stewart for the most part. So tell me, why did the car in front of start also accelerate, and only narrowly avoided Ward? Stewart isn't a good enough driver to miss a person, I guess. You can't miss what you don't see.
