and it's their worst song IMO

Make aa better case Segue, lol   i actually love them but never ever liked The Middle (the hit song)

Mick

I love The Middle but for me...the clear winner for a mainstream hit was surely Sweetness or Blood, Sweat, Sugar.

The Middle is a feel good anthem though, but I never have understood why it took off the way it did when they have better songs.

It still makes me sad songs like The World You Loved (was and still is a major fan fave song that should have been a music video), Always Be or My Best Theory weren't hits. They should have been.

Jimmy Eat World have never had much luck with singles, which is insane because they have a catalogue rich with potential smashes.

Sweetness should have been bigger.

Particularly the demo version from the Clarity era. That's my fave version

I like that version. But I think the studio cut from BA has more of a commercial edge to it.

True but in 1999 the demo as it was would have fit radio perfectly for that time.

Personally, I think the worst thing about The Middle is that it’s their only smash hit of that caliber, and I think it misleads potential fans ever so slightly about their other songs. I don’t think The Middle is like a major left turn or anything, but there’s a certain element of it that is really unique for them, and when potential fans hear like, A Praise Chorus or Table For Glasses, right after, they might be initially underwhelmed.

I feel this way too. They are a creative, truly brilliant band who have been represented by a wonderful, but musically timid, pop song.

Jimmy Eat World are my favourite pop rock band of the 2000s. I know Green Day, Weezer, My Chemical Romance and others dominated but Jimmy are special in a very particular way.

At least the guitar solo does rip.

Jimmy Eat World and The Goo Goo Dolls. I sense some Third Eye Blind on my horizon...

And then probably more Pearl Jam. And Taylor Swift.

I'm liking me some big fat juicy pop tunes.

Muse.

Say what you will and Muse are a punchline these days but early Muse i adore.  They're "newer" stuff is more spotty but all of it has merit.......i see that now.

Except will Of the People.  that truly IS horrid.

QOTSA for the past year

my co-worker is a huge rush/prog fan and plays lot of stuff on the job radio i really enjoy, so i've finally been exposed to some Moody Blues and REO Speedwagon against my will and dig it. I was always meaning to get into them but never got around to it. he plays plenty of other cool bands that i'm picking up on but those are the big two..

then of course there's some more generic overplayed stuff i'd rather never have to listen to again like AC/DC or Van Halen for ex, but i digress.

Could not agree more. Loved Simulation Theory and absolutely loathe, hate, and despise the cringeworthy Will of the People.

me too.  it's the most lazy thing they've ever done.  just idea after idea they've done before.  but with more than half the passion and worse production.

I think it's a Muse IA actually not the real band.

Been still playing lots of Porcupine Tree still.

they've really risen to a fav band.  with a near perfect discography if we ignore thee first 4 albums.

Trying Anathema as well.  I want to love them but their lyrics since 2010.  UGH........grow a set.  Elmo has more edge. Musically i love it. if they just wrote different lyrics.

and I LOVED the two late 90's albums.  Don't know why they decided to re-group in this way but......did i mention the lyrics are not it?
