x1yyz
The first time I heard of Jane's Addiction was when I saw them open for Love & Rockets, probably 1987-ish.Wow. They didn't release Nothing's Shocking until '88so you caught them really early on. Do you remember what they played? It may have been '88. It was a long time ago and I don't quite remember! I don't know what they played because I had never heard of the band before that and wasn't familiar with any of their songs. But Perry Ferrell was scary looking! Digital Dad
I saw Eric Johnson at The Omni in Berkeley. A small toilet. It was before Ah Via Musicom came out. He was two hours late so he played until 3 AM. How dare you call the Omni a toilet!!;) haha. Makes me sad to see that building atill there. Unoccupied. At least the Berkely Square turned into a paint store. ;)

Turbine Freight
I saw Iron Maiden supporting Judas Priest pre-Dickinson. Excellent. My brother saw them in a pub in Huddersfield before they even had the first album out. He came home from the gig with a copy of The Soundhouse Tapes & one of their DIY T-shirts!

Lucas
Sometime around 1989-90, my girlfriend and I went to see Junkyard at L'Amours in Brooklyn ... The first band to go on was The Black Crows, and it was literally me, my girlfriend and 2 other people standing in front of the stage while they played .... . . goose
We almost had Berlin playing at one of our school dances but the preps put the kibosh on and hired the same old cover band. Berlin broke it big a few months later with Sex (I'm a...) and Riding on the Metro.
Rod in Toronto
This obviously doesn't count, but I met a couple of retired teachers in Sydney who said they hired a then unknown AC/DC to play at a school party, in 74 or 75.
Lorraine
The only warm up band that was good enough that I even remembered them and that somewhat "made it big" was Golden Earring who opened for The Who on their Quadrophenia Tour in the early seventies.
