Why is there so much hate against Snakes & Arrows?

I just listened to Bravest Face...not a bad song. In fact it is better than a lot of stuff they did in the 90s. Thank you everyone for making me revisit this album.

I don't have a face brave enough to listen to that particular song on the album, but thank you just the same~

I happen to think S & A is one of Rush's best works in a number of years.

Better than CA because, if nothing else, the mixing is far superior. After the horrible mixing on VT they got right with S & A and then went backwards on CA.

If the songs suck I don't care if it was done in Doubly, it's unlistenable.

The songs on CA are great to outstanding, the songs on S&A are, let's just say, not. That's why CA is infinitely better than S&A.

But WHY do you think they're better?

They're heavier (in the non dirge like sense). Not plodding. More metal yet more melodic. Lyrics are less preachy. They're interesting (well, maybe not Caravan's). I don't even mind the lyrics to BU2B, and not just because it could be just as easily read as a screed against socialist governments.

Headlong Flight and The Anarchist are masterpieces...and the Garden is the most poignant thing Rush has ever written and beautiful musically.

Okay I was just curious. Personally I find the lyrics on CA really juvenile and some of Neil's weakest lyrics.

Certainly. And I would put CA below that.

Have anyone here aside from myself ever wondered what it is about songs that make certain people like them and others dislike them?

I often wondered if there is anything in common with all the songs I like the best - a pattern of notes together - stuff like that.

One time on here I think we had a thread about listing your ten favorite Rush songs. I don't think any two lists matched or, if they happened to, the songs weren't in the same order.

Musical preference and taste is amazingly a very individual thing.

We can be a fickle bunch, we music lovers. Lorraine, I suspect that the notion you have about common features connecting the songs you love is probably a useful one - but it would be very hard to isolate what those might be. It would be interesting to generate a list: for example Lee's a fantastic bass player no matter what he does, yet there's a certain inventiveness of approach combined with chops that I favor over anything else. What is that exactly? All I can say is I know it when I hear it.

We Hold On sounds like an old Byrds song to me. That's why I like it.

I'm damned if I do, damned if I don't. When I genuinely hated the entire album, I got hell. Now I like almost half of it, and I have to explain why I like the songs I do.

I like We Hold On as well.

I'm not sure that there's another RUSH album that has as many songs with really good parts mixed with awful parts. That's what makes it a tough listen for me. I feel like I'm listening for simple moments, rather than the whole song. That's probably why I rarely listen to it. It's just too much work.

Because of the lyrics. I thought that's what we were talking about?

I was asking specifically about why you think CA's lyrics are worse than T4E's, preferably with examples.

Oh I see. I think the storyline for CA is very simplistic and it runs through the entire album. For example, the "can't stop thinking big" and the "everything will turn out for the best" that runs through the album, though nice ideas on their own, are annoyingly repeated ad nauseum.

S&A for me suffers the same fate as most albums in the CD era, too long. Not every melody/idea is worthy of it's own song, but in a "fill up the CD" mentality that's what happens. Rush has put out some awesome 45 minute albums following Power Windows, but they're hidden in 60+ minute CDs.

At least all of that extra stuff wasn't cut and released as separate albums.

Be careful how loud you say that. Don't give them any ideas.

I don't really disagree, I just find stories more interesting than lectures (like S&A especially...but by far the biggest reason I prefer CA to S&A and T4E is mostly the tunes.

CA reminds me a lot of Vapor Trails. Very noisy and the songs are just so-so. I will say that I do like Caravan and Headlong Flight (musically) but the rest just annoys me.
