what's giving some people the impression that fly by night and something for nothing are underrated?

Yes. They're both overrated.

In the case of Fly By Night people tend to diss it as a simple song, I think Peart doesn't like it, they never play it live and you never hear it praised along with a lot of the highly regarded stuff. I've always liked it though from way back when I first heard it around 1980, it's never got old for me.

peart doesn't even like cygnus x-1!

FBN is a textbook example of a perfect, feel-good 70s hard rock tune.

Peart doesn't like anything pre-Moving Pictures.

Geddy Lee doesn't like Fly By Night either. Or Lakeside Park.

What the artists actually like or dislike regarding their own work doesn't matter in the slightest though.

I know

Noticed bravest face gets a bit of stick sometimes and i for the life of me cant understand why.

One of top 10 rush ever for me. Possibly even top 5.

I can understand how Geddy's yodeling can be irritating but to me a definite quality song. No way it's top ten for me though but is underrated.

The Necromancer.

I've tried man. I've really tried to like this one. Maybe someday I will. Seems like an acquired taste not unlike the strongest of coffees if one is not a coffee drinker. A very hardly acquired taste.

Considering I drink strong coffee someday I'll acquire the taste that is The Necromancer.

Lessons. Everytime someone says side 2 of 2112 is weak except something for nothing, I just keep thinking "How can people not love this song?"

Love the guitar, the bass fills, drum fills. Its just so good

The Body Electric is another that I find to be very underrated, especially around here

I agree. It's a very visual song. Very much in the way Red Barchetta takes you along for the ride. Pun intended.

Yeah, it must be the 1001 bit that turns people off, but in all honesty I think it's a prog masterpiece

Beneath, Between and Behind

I adore this song every time I hear it and the playing on it is exceptional. I love the way the groove completely changes during the 3rd verse. Clever and I can't wait for it every time I hear it.

Such a great song... and shame on all of you for not knowing it's greatness!

LedRush and I must share some brain cells or something (have to add that Zeppelin was my 2nd musical love after Rush), but I too have to go with The Necromancer.

Into the Darkness does drag a bit but it sets up the mood for the song. It is very calming and prepares you for the journey your mind is about to go through. Under The Shadow turns into metal bliss and contains Lerxst best shredding. Then you get the Return Of The Prince celebrating the victory of good over evil along with more mind melting guitar work.

Certainly not the song for people who like predictable 5 minute songs with verse, chorus, verse, chorus, bridge, solo, verse, chorus.

The guitar tone on that song is the guitar tone that I want (and I'm close)
