Rutlefan
About 90% of what Tim Burton's done. Loved Ed Wood (tip o' the pin to Martin Landau), liked a few others, like Batman and Beetlejuice (actually, loved both of those when they came out), but I find most of his movies to be a tedious rehash of nerdy teenage goth obsessions he's never outgrown unlike almost everyone else who might have had a reclusive childhood. His turn at Willy Wonka ("Charlie and the Chocolate Factory") is getting play on one of the channels my kids watch and it is completely unwatchable. It's so awful it seems it must have been intentionally made so. So does that make it overrated? 83% positive reviews acc to Rotten Tomato, which shows you what they know (the audience is less stupid, with only half liking it). If it had scored 10% it would have been vastly overrated. Maybe the worst of his movies but most of the rest aren't all that much better. His Willy Wonka is one of my favourite movies from my childhood. Burton's "Willy Wonka" (Charlie and the ...)?!? I grew up with Gene Wilder's Willy Wonka. In comparison, Burton/Depp's is abysmal. Had you seen the earlier Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory? if not, have you now? Edited May 9, 2017 by Rutlefan

What..! Did I get it the wrong way round..? :PIt's probably generational, but the Back to the Future trilogy is as perfect a movie experience as I have experienced. Especially the first one. I absolutely adore that movie. Nothing but good feelings and memories. The concept for Back to the Future is both original and universal in that everyone has wondered what their parents were like when they were kids. The movie had the perfect amount of humor and drama and is one of my all time favorites.

theredtamasrule
Star WarsGodfather Citizen KaneSpartacusLOTRCasino GoodfellasRaging Bull...Seriously with this list??? No...except for LOTR...I adore the books and the deviations taken in the films gnaw at me too much to enjoy at this point. And, frankly, Star Wars is not a good movie: dumb dialogue, Luke whining like a little bitch, generally wooden acting by everyone not named Sir Alec Guiness.

Segue Myles
Totally forgot Star Wars. Add Harry Potter as well. Love the books. Like the films. But they aren't worthy of the money they made.

Lucas
I think the keyword here is "overrated" - not necessarily "bad" ( even though some are ) Off the top of the head: - Forrest Gump - Raging Bull - Goodfellas - Gone With The Wind - Citizen KaneHow in the hell is Citizen Kane "over rated"? A movie that is among the most groundbreaking in the history of cinema cannot be overrated. It can't. oh yes it can There is no denying that it is a fine movie .. But not GOAT .. It just doesn't move me like a candidate for GOAT should Granted, any film with such lofty expectations is going to have a backlash, but I just don't feel that it can fill the jock strap of many other - better - films

Rutlefan
Ha, I really loved Kimba too, even more than Speed Racer, though they were in many ways seemed like the same cartoon in essence, along with Marine Boy (Kimba=Speed=Marine Boy). Marine Boy was probably my favorite of the three. Edited May 9, 2017 by Rutlefan

In 1941 it pulled together numerous techniques and innovations into one movie and basically changed the way you can tell a story via film making. Also, decades of other filmmakers utilizing the way Welles combined those techniques and innovations waters down Citizen Kane's emotional impact. It can be difficult to appreciate the film after watching the films it has influenced first. Same goes for 2001.
