Exactly why do people hate Dog Years again?

It seems to me that people here are rather a span of geological time than be listening to this Dog Years.

Not me, I will listen to the song as long as there are tortoises on Galapagos. :P

It shouldn't need to be said, but here's why this song doesn't work:

In a dog's life

A year is really more like seven

And all too soon a canine

Will be chasing cars in doggie heaven

It seems to me

As we make our own few circles 'round the sun

We get it backwards

And our seven years go by like one

Dog years --- It's the season of the itch

Dog years --- With every scratch it reappears

In the dog days

People look to Sirius

Dogs cry for the moon

But these connections are mysterious

It seems to me

While it's true that every dog will have his day

When all the bones are buried

There is barely time to go outside and play

Dog years --- It's the season of the itch

Dog years --- With every scratch it reappears

Dog years --- For every sad son of a bitch

Dog years --- With his tail between his ears

I'd rather be a tortoise from Galapagos

Or a span of geological time

Than be living in these dog years

In a dog's brain

A constant buzz of low-level static

One sniff at the hydrant

And the answer is automatic

It seems to me

As well make our own few circles 'round the block

We've lost our senses

For the higher-level static of talk

This is exactly why I love this song.

Typical goober lazyness. The only way to be lazier is to post the song and type "See?" He did spare you all a five paragraph snoosefest though.

You're right. What I should have added at the end of pasting the lyrics was:

/thread

It's pretty simple with this song. The lyrics quite obviously suck large donkey balls. Maybe I should have said that as it would have been more succinct, but showing the lyrics allows everyone to see it for themselves. Asking why do people hate Dog Years is like asking why do people hate things that suck? If anyone wants to question that, let me again refer them to the above lyrics. ;)

Thanks for sparing the Forum your other four paragraphs of nattering negativism, you nabob.

Actually, I think that 25% of the lyrics on T4E are weak! Not one of Neils better efforts...

The only tunes I can really handle anymore are Driven, Half the World, and Time and Motion...Resist is more palatable as an acoustic song like they did a few tours back. But the rest are ok, and the weak-ish lyrics are Dog Years, and Virtuality...I mean, really "put your message in a modem...."

The answer to the question posed in the thread title is "Because of the herd mentality."

Nah, I don't hate it. But I didn't like it well before I knew about anyone else's opinion of it.

My "Rush Song I Hate" is You Bet Your Life. And I don't care who is in agreement with me!!! I simply can't listen to that whole song anymore

Yeah...I can't listen to a lot of RTB anymore either....Dreamline, Bravado, and Where's my Thing? are in the iPod rotation...I think that's it from that album...

Truthfully, none of the tunes on T4E seem at all personal or intimate. From the detached aloofness of the title track and "Totem", to the can't-think-of-a-topic mentality of "Dog Years", "Half the World", and "Color of Right", to the attempt-to-capture-the-social-buzz of "Virtuality", the album just falls flat.

Even something as seemingly initmate as "Resist" is built around an unoriginal thought (first penned by Oscar Wilde) and I really don;t believe Neil has had any trouble resisting temptation to any great extent. Neil and Oscar Wilde are diametric opposites in personality, whimsy, and where they stick their cocks.

In fact, the only songs with even a shred of personal depth and "flesh and blood and fire" are "Time and Motion" and "Carve Away the Stone".

Compared with the open-heart surgery emotion of VT and the powerful explorarion of gender identity of CP, T4E comes across as Neil clutching at lyrical straws and, ultimately, sinking.

Not at all.

Yeah - the song sucks because the song sucks.

Sure, but I think that it's singled out for special hatred by some because it's safe and non-controversial to hate, and is singled out for special favour by others for exactly the same reason. Because the fact is, it's not a HORRIBLY, TERRIBLY bad song, it's just a mediocre Rush song with lyrics that fail because they're trying too hard to be clever. Rush fans seem to find lyrics that fail due to contrived cleverness to be a lot less forgiveable than lyrics that fail because they're trying too hard to be meaningful or profound.

I like this song just as I really like this album. The lyrics aren't Neil's best, but they certainly aren't his worst, either. I like the puns on this song, the music, the sound...really everything. This isn't a top song for me by any stretch, but it is quite good and I smile every time I hear it.

The lyrics to Dog Years, while falling flat, are light years better than the lyrics to the execrable Half the World

Half the world hates

What half the world does every day

Half the world waits

While half gets on with it anyway

Half the world lives

Half the world makes

Half the world gives

While the other half takes

Half the world is

Half the world was

Half the world thinks

While the other half does

Half the world talks

With half a mind on what they say

Half the world walks

With half a mind to run away

Half the world lies

Half the world learns

Half the world flies

As half the world turns

Half the world cries

Half the world laughs

Half the world tries

To be the other half

Half of us divided

Like a torn-up photograph

Half of us are trying

To reach the other half

Half the world cares

While half the world is wasting the day

Half the world shares

While half the world is stealing away

Lazy post is lazy, and can never prove what the author wants it to. Can we please stop with these?

Read them again. If, after reading them twice, you can find any way to defend them, I'd love to hear it.

Effective juxtaposition of opposites, either in 1 line or 2 lines. Effectively using the same imagery and language to make opposite statements. Accessible and relatable without bludgeoning you to death with a message, though some argue they bludgeon you with repetition. I think the nuances of how he presents similar comparisons in different ways is interesting. I'm not going to pretend that this is high art. But after being forced to listen to the lyrics on most of Counterparts, T4E was a relief.

Effective? Well, I guess. If you're a high school sophomore just discovering the power of effective juxtaposed imagery. However, since Neil was in his mid-40's when he wrote this, it still falls flat.

The lyrics to half the world convey the idea of division among humanity while sounding good in song form.

Not every piece of art needs to be some overtly intellectual endeavor into nuance and subtlety. In fact, when an idea can be communicated simply, it is usually a better idea.
