Principled Man
http://dsurface.files.wordpress.com/2010/06/deliverance-hand2.jpg Let's be honest. A film like this would NEVER be made today.....not in the same, graphic way..... It both shocked and mezmerized film-goers of the early 70's. A brilliant film, yet almost unwatchable...... http://www.destgulch.com/movies/deliver/deliv01.jpg
goose
An amazing film, and I agree that it represents a lost style. The 70's had so many great movies.

HowItIs
I saw Deliverance in the theater when it came out (my friend had a Burt Reynolds thing). I doubt that it could be made today, you are right. What a terrific cast, though. I still watch Ronny Cox and Ned Beatty in nearly anything they do. Reynolds....eh... that was her thing, not mine

CantStopThinkingBig
Are you kidding? The rape scene is tame compared to some of the stuff they put out today. Watching it now, it's more comical than anything.

circumstantial tree
I'd seen it before but I didn't care for it. That kid with the banjo looks a bit creepy and I don't think it's Hollywood makeup. The scene with the hand coming up out of the water inspired Brian DePalma's ending to "Carrie". And then Friday the 13th borrowed from Carrie. So, you see, it was a pivotal film. John boorman, who also directed excaliber used only three people in terms of a crew to film the river scenes...three freaking people!!! Such a great movie with little help to make. do you own the dvd with director commentary?
Cowtothesky
If you ever visit the Chattooga River (where it was filmed), do not go into a locally owned store and start impersonating the movie. My wife and I did this in a canoe shop and the owner told us to leave and shut down the store after we left. They don't find it humorous there. micgtr71
After watching this movie I wanted to call my parents and go to church. It disturbed me that much...not the rape scene per se, but the whole lifestyle/killing/hiding it thing...shivers.

Cowtothesky
QUOTE (-D-RocK- @ Jun 25 2012, 07:37 PM) I dunno, it was a great movie and everything, but after watching I kinda had a crush on Ned Beatty. I wonder how many twisted people tried to contact him after this movie. He probably got some pretty weird mail. It is one of those roles that would make you famous, but at the same time, attract lots of pervs.
CantStopThinkingBig
one thing I don't get... why did they pick Ned Beatty? Jon Voight is clearly the more attractive man
