Animate
QUOTE (Del_Duio @ May 9 2012, 07:24 AM) QUOTE (Animate @ May 8 2012, 07:17 AM) I think the word "tears" is overused in Rush lyrics. Geddy and Neil are both guilty of this. I noticed awhile ago a lot of Rush songs had "like a (fill in the blank)" repeating theme. Like an English rain Like a force of nature Like a rare and precious metal Like a righteous inspiration Like a teardrop in the ocean Like a streak of lightning Like a brilliant shooting star Like a stranger coming out of the rain Like a million little doorways Like a million little crossroads Like a torn up photograph Like a shipwrecked mariner adrift on an unknown sea Like a pair of vagabonds who wave between two passing trains Like a ghost rider Like a cornered beast Like a stone in the river Like a forest bows to winter Like a flower in the desert Like a steely blade in a silken sheath Like a pillar of cloud, the smoke lingers It's almost.. Like a spiral sea UNENDIIIINGGG!!! Good catch! I can see Neil making a potential list of candidates now.. Like a Rolling Stone. (rock you) Like a Hurricane Like a Virgin (touched for the very first time) Like a Candle in the Wind and thinking "Damit, all the good ones are taken already!, Oh well, guess I will just have to go with "Like a teardrop in the ocean". Cowtothesky
Here is mine: I don't like how Geddy doubles his bass and vocals with more than 1 track on recordings. It sounds terrible to me. I think he should do 1 track of bass and 1 track of vocals. For the past 10+ years, he has done this. It sounds terrible. Another is their departure of the 3-piece sound. I love the sound of a true 3-piece band. 1 track of guitar, 1 track of bass, 1 track of drums. There is no need to add synths and rhythm guitar tracks. If I wanted to hear a 5 piece band, I would listen to someone else. However, Headlong Flight sounds like s step in the right direction. Love the solo section. Czarcasm
QUOTE (Powlich @ May 5 2012, 11:18 AM) I really like this topic, so I just had to register. Hi everybody! Now, here is the deal: - If we're talking about studio versions, I would say "Freeze" is my favourite song in the "fear" series. The studio recordings of the last 2 songs on MP plus most of Signals and GuP are to thin sounding. If they had the same power as in the GuP live video, that period could probably be my favourite. Much more guitar, but no less keyboard. - Most overrated album: Counterparts. Can't see what's so special about it. People talk all the time about "the best thing since CP". I would say VT, S&A and probably also CA is their best stuff since Power Windows. (at least) - Most overrated song could be "Jacobs ladder". They could easily cut 1-2 mins of that song. They could do that with many old "epics", and it would help the old albums to rock all the way through. - Most underrated song could be "Spindrift". I really like the powerfull singing in some parts of the song. (not Geddy's ooooooo's) The outro is rocking soooo hard! - The guitar solo in BU2B is the best one of the 3 new songs, and I almost don't want to call it a solo. - Can't see why people are going crazy about Alex's shredding solos in songs like Headlong flight or Working man on the latest tour. If any other guitarrist would have played exactly the same, most of you would call it emotionless crap. I myself prefer his more melodic 80's solos. - I don't see any of the band members as master musicians. I just like the way they write music, and tries to explore new horizons. Dream Theater plays with their brains, Rush with their hearts. For me Rush > DT because of that. - My favourite Rush music video is....... Far cry! - C'mon girls, are the Rush guys really THAT good looking!? - I like it when they don't try to hurry the realease of the new album. We all want quality, don't we? Just my thoughts! I'm flattered that my topic made you sign up! Welcome to TRF and enjoy your stay!

You know, all the 70s albums had layered guitars, too. And keyboards. And other overdubs. I'd be hard pressed to think of a single rock album or maybe any kind of album since maybe the 50s where there are no overdubs or doubling (or more) of instruments. On a recent interview with Terry Brown he talked specifically about being so impressed with Alex's doubling of the guitars on the very first Rush album. I understand what you're getting at and I enjoy more space and separation when I can get it but having essentially a 4 track studio album with one each for guitar, bass, drums, and vocals is just not realistic and hasn't been for ages. arushhead
QUOTE (jnoble @ May 8 2012, 06:12 AM) If I never hear Tom Sawyer again....either on the radio or live in concert or even played by a tribute band that'd be fine by me. Natural Science, The Pass, Signals, and Animate are overrated by fans. Neil's drumming on Fly By Night...both the playing itself and the sound of his drums kicks ass and is much more enjoyable than his "more mature and technologically advanced Gruber-influenced" current style HYF is underrated. Yes, it's not hard rock and it's lush and overproduced, but the song writing and arrangments are for the most part very very good. Rupert Hine's thin production worked better for Presto than it did for RTB. Geddy's Wal era bass playing was more enjoyable than his post Counterparts distorted Fender Jazz flamenco "play as many notes as fast as possible in every song" style I like the narroration in songs like The Necromancer and Cygnus X-1 Geddy ability to compose and sing a decent melody largely disappeared around Test For Echo I enjoy screechy '70s young Geddy's singing much more than straining cracking "more mature and soulful" Geddy of now. VT is more listenable than the preachy borefest of Snakes Neil Pearts ability to write enjoyable understandable lyrics started going downhill starting with Counterparts and got worse with every album since Grace Under Pressure is an OK album but doesn't make me convulse with joy like most other fans the three new songs, especially Headlong Flight, aren't all that great. Headlong Flight is overlong, needlessly complicated, and the melody is almost non-existant. Which is what I think of most of their stuff from the last 10 years. Superconductor is a fun song I've always liked. Ditto Where's my Thing. I'm tired of hearing the band and fans discuss Moving Pictures....either the songs themselves or the recording of it. And definatly I'm tired of hearing any of those songs on radio or in concert. Drum solos bore me. The last Peart solo I liked was the one on ASOH. nice post. similiar thought 'ere lol

tas7
I prefer Hemispheres to 2112, think it is a far superior record.
Dscrapre
The list of Rush albums that I like more than Vapor Trails is growing increasingly smaller. How it Is is glorious. The Stars Look Down is one of the most truthful songs I've ever heard. Freeze captures uneasiness and fear unlike any other song I know of. I prefer all but 2 songs from VT to nearly anything released before A Farewell to Kings. Edited May 13, 2012 by Dscrapre
EmotionDetector
QUOTE (tas7 @ May 12 2012, 10:30 PM) I prefer Hemispheres to 2112, think it is a far superior record. You are correct. But I don't think that is really considered "uncommon". In fact, Hemispheres tends to be voted many people's all-time favourite Rush album. But again, yeah...I agree. It is better than 2112 overall.
