Review (SPOILERS)

Scarlett Johansson as an extraterrestrial femme fatale cruising the streets of Glasgow in Jonathan Glazer’s cerebral sci-fi horror fantasy “Under the Skin” is an indelible personification of predatory allure. Wearing a dark wig and a fake-fur jacket, her character, an alien with a sinister agenda, is as fetishized an object of desire as Marlene Dietrich admired through the lens of Josef von Sternberg. You may also think of Ava Gardner, as perfect a female specimen as Hollywood ever produced, coldly working her wiles.

Ms. Johansson’s luscious, cherry-red lips, onto which she is shown daubing deeper shades of crimson, seem to have an extra cushion of softness. In “Under the Skin,” it is as if the voice of Samantha — the operating system Ms. Johansson voiced in “Her” — has taken human form. But instead of a seemingly empathetic cyberfriend, she turns out to be a heartless humanoid temptress from outer space.

Sounds interesting enough. And Scarlet...

Also watched Jack Reacher yesterday, as it was on TV. While very watchable it wasn't fascinating enough for me, which means I didn't wait for the commercial break to piss. Very predictable, but nice to see Werner Herzog in an acting role.

I tried to watch this because it was filmed in Pittsburgh, but about 20 minutes in I was bored silly.

I thought it was watchable, not bad.

Doesn't Rosemund Pike look weird these days with the permanently surprised look?

I don't know Pittsburgh, but I wondered where it was so I noticed the stadium name and looked it up. Pirates eh? :madra:

Pirates, Penquins and Steelers. :)

I know all about the Stealers! We'll be playing them later in the year in Pittsburgh! :madra:

I have a lot of trouble taking John Travolta seriously these days and in this film the way he looks (hair plug crew cut. silly Amish beard. madly serious expression) and acts is even worse than ever. The performance from him as a vengeful soldier is like something out of a bad Saturday Night Live sketch with his ridiculous Serb/Bosnian accent that sounds part Scottish, part exaggerated Russian, he can't be serious with this shit surely? And De Niro? What is he doing in this? I heard he replaced Nick Cage, why is De Niro taking Nick Cage's cast-off scripts? If Nick Cage is turning it down you know it's trash! And so the De Niro sell-out decline continues. Travolta should go back to dancing...or maybe not...

As bland as that was, it's not even the worst of DeNiro's direct to DVD sell out era of late. That (dis)honor goes to that awful 50 Cent movie, Freelancers. Worst 2012 I've ever seen and I guessed right, to a degree, the twist ending right from the start.

Yeah I saw that one it sucked on ice. And there's another bad one too with De Niro and 50 "one facial expression" Cent plus Al Pacino, called Righteous Kill which isn't much better, why the hell Pacnio and De Niro did it is anyone's guess.

:madra: This is a superior swashbuckler! There's battles, there's blood, there's death, there's guts! There's swords and shields, rape and pillage, there's DEATH! And more battles and guts! And BLOOD! And there's killing and slaughter and butchery! :madra:

And because it's the director's cut there's even more blood and guts and death and swordplay and battles and beatings and asskickings and DEATH and BLOOD! And even more guts! :madra:

You've got a powerhouse team of knights! Obviously Mads Mickklesen is the psycho of the group, Ray Winstone plays the HARD BASTARD, Clive Owen plays the courageous leader, Ioan Gruffudd plays the restless sneaky devil, Keira Knightly plays the pouty tart, Steven Dillane plays the magical madman and Stellen Skarsgard as the beastly brutish bitch! :madra:

You've got snow and weather and mountains and forests and WAR! :madra: And even more blood and guts and DEATH and fights and dust ups and skirmishes and betrayals and swords to the guts! :madra: And BLOOD and DEATH! And WAR! :madra:

You'll be reaching for the butter knife to do some shadow swashbuckling after seeing this one! :madra:

You know, if I hadn't seen the movie and knew it sucks big time, by your review I'd be all over it...

Rod: even I didn't like Under the Skin, I posted my thoughts some pages ago, but I can't find them...

On to what I saw yesterday:

http://www.impawards.com/2012/posters/stand_up_guys_ver3.jpg

This is a great example of what you get once you take two GREAT actors and let them have a ball. Really, all the joy of this movie is in the dialogues between Pacino and Walken, even if they are talking about nothing most of the time, it's just their expressions, their delivery... I had Pacino for dead, but here he's all over the place in the right way. Highly recommended.

Oh, and there's also a naked chick in the trunk.

It might be good for a laugh, just seeing Travolta will do it...

 The story isn't so great and it's nothing to do with the traditional King Arthur tale but it's great for fights :madra: ....and battles, and blood, and fire, spears in the guts, and DEATH! ...and giant catapults and flames, and swords and blood and guts and slashing and burning and death and ice! And Blood and guts and death and battles and war and pouty tart swordplay and fear and death and BLOOD! :madra:

Yeah, that movie was one big gimmick which was basically,

"Let's reunite them but have Pacino as the bad guy and DeNiro as the good guy!"

Doesn't help that it's directed by the guy who did 88 Minutes, another Pacino dud. THAT movie was on the shelf for a couple of years for a very good reason.

Rod, regarding Travolta, yes, there are plenty of trademark Travolta histrionics, in case you're wondering.
