Should be quiet

I work in a library, and it's a never-ending battle! Unfortunately, our culture is becoming increasingly inconsiderate of others. I see the "it's all about me!" attitude all the time.

If more librarians were carrying, this problem would go away quickly.

They should be beaten with whatever books/phones/laptops they brought in. There are always those two people in who come into the individual study room/library just to gossip. Whenever I ask them to shush, I get 2 minutes of silence, tops. I even ask them to take it outside and come back, they just stare at me as if they'll be shot by going out there.

You would think librarians of all people would have library cards with them at all times. tongue.gif

This post saddens me.

Wow, you guys have some pretty serious thoughts on this matter.

What if you're asking someone where to find a book? Or talking to someone who works in the library? When I'm trying to find the right book for a research paper I sure as heck do a lot of talking. You kind of need to, y'know, communicate. Librarians are there to help, no?

I am sorry if my post offended you. I didn't really have any thought on the matter, so I thought I'd make a joke. confused13.gif

I don't go in libraries much but librarians can be very helpful indeed.

... but do you really think this thread was going to be a serious discussion?

I was serious (minus the exaggeration of beating people). To talk quietly in the main hall of the library with the librarian to find a book is fine, but the moment people start talking around the study areas I get really annoyed.

and wrappers...that crinkly cellophane crackling throughout the room.

if they get pulled taught, they make that highpitched squeaky nails-on-a-chalkboardish sound :shudders in disgust:

have you seen the tic tac commercial?

I don't think it's appropriate.You have to respect

the silence and solitude (at certain times) of a library.

I do agree, there are times when you have to ask

the librarian question's..but, then again..

The Library is all about reading..

It's NOT a place to socialize.

If ya want'a yak your jaw's, go to the cafeteria.

People should use their 'library voice' - which is the same as one's 'elevator voice', if you will. It is more out of politeness than a rule where I am.

There's a least one person every day you want to do this bitchslap.gif to...but I don't suggest that anyone should do that. Ever.

Exactly. I have never heard of a library that did not allow talking.
