I got 5 and 23 using the following method (and assuming 366 days for the birthday one, which is slightly off in theory but probably OK in practice).   For the "same birthday" question, I believe the appropriate method is as follows:   The first person can't have the same birthday as anyone; they're first.   The second person has a 1 in 366 probability of having the same birthday as the first person, which means that there's a 365 out of 366 chance that their birthday is different.   The third person has a 2 in 366 probability of having the same birthday as the first or second person so they have a 364 out of 366 chance of not having the same birthday as either person, so the probability given two people is 1 * 365/366 * 364/366.   I then continued the process until (n)*(n-1)*(n-2)*...*(n-x)/n^x (where n = 366) was less than 50%, and got 23.   n = 12 in the zodiac question and I got an answer of 5.
