I may or may not have mentioned that, to pay a lot of bills, I had to sell my black American Jazz. It was one of the most difficult things I've ever had to do, and 12 months later, I still miss it. A lot.

Fortunately there is a happy ending to this story. I managed to score a gig playing 80s covers with my brother, and I scraped enough together to get myself a Jaguar smile.gif

I don't have a real amp yet; that's my next purchase.

Shmancy! Meh... not really. When I get done refurbishing them with better electronics & hardware, then... yes.

Actually both now have Babicz bridges which make a huge difference IMO. I have a set of Bartolinis on order for the 4 string. Not sure yet what I'm going to put on the 5

Got myself this cabinet today, off Craigslist. Total steal. Gonna get a portaflex head to go with it.

Gotta love those ampeg cabs. I played an 8X10 back in the 90s. Never liked moving it though. Friend of mine had one built into a road case so that all you had to do was take off the front door and park it. Thing weighed about 4000lbs. When it was off the truck and in the venue it was great. At 3 in the morning and 500 feet and a set of stairs away from the truck it was menacing.

I haven't had to move it much so far... it is heavy, but the bar and the wheels make it doable. It isn't any worse than the hardware case I used to have to move back in my drumming days.

Here it is with my PF350

My basses:

http://i984.photobucket.com/albums/ae327/sgray266/071-1.jpg

#1 Parts P bass, Dimarzio Model P, American Fender bridge, after-market tuning keys, replacement Fender licensed neck with rosewood fingerboard, custom orange pickguard in cream/vintage white body.

Squier VM 3TS Jazz bass with no mods yet. It looks like JPJ's bass.

After I work and save for a few months, I fully plan on picking up a Ric 4003. That way, when "musicians" who know better than I do at gigs question my thoroughly non-legit instrument choices, I can point over to my Ric and say "Oh, yeah?" Plus, whenever I hear that sound on an earlier Rush or Yes record, it drives me crazy!

I may not have the nicest instruments in the world, but I really like parts instruments. Mine plays and sounds nicer than most anything I've ever pulled off a shop wall. I may not be able to afford a Fender this minute, but I've had the opportunity in the past and never really seen the need. Also, I'm in a bit of a conundrum as there are times when I'd like to emulate Geddy, but his preference seems to tend toward Jazz Basses and maple boards whereas my favorites are Precisions and rosewood.

Rig

I have a newer Peavey Tour TNT 115 combo, which is perched on top of an Acoustic B410. Yes, I'm aware of the perils of mixing driver sizes, but it's working fine for me. Eventually I'd like to get a Peavey VB-2 tube head, then I'll bring my combo home and get another 410 to match the first.

Does anyone have some feedback on JBP bass guitars?

I did some research on Jeff Berlin and found him to be an amazing player.

I do know he teamed up with Dean Guitars to make the Dean JBP Artists Series.

The bass I saw at a local thrift store WAS NOT the Dean JBP Artist Series but a JBP 4 string with a soapbar style pickup.

Looks to me to be a decent low-range product but I don't really know the history and/or value of the Jeff Berlin's bass guitars with only the JBP headstock stamp.

From what I have seen, the Jeff Berlin basses from Dean Guitars had two soapbar pickups. Is this from a manufacturer other than Dean?

Peavey made a Jeff Berlin bass back in the early 90s and it was a great bass. The Deans are not very expensive new and from what I have played of their budget line (not the JB), they are pretty decent guitars for the money.

If it only has one soapbar, that is different from what Berlin played. Unfortunately, they don't command a high resale value.

Here's a couple pics...

I realize it is not a very valuable bass but I was wondering if it was a Peavy or just a JBP brand or something else.

I got it for my son, first bass, and it sounds alright. Paid only $40.00.

Very MusicMan/G&L looking. Makes sense. Berlin is awesome. Neil played on one of his albums in the 80's and he played with Neil at the Buddy Rich tribute show in NY a few years back.

1983 Gibson Custom Victory Bass - my first pro instrument

1998 Warwick Thumb Bolt-On 4-string (signed by Ritchie Blackmore....I know, I know..but it's Ritchie Blackmore!) - my main bass

1999 G&L L-2500 - my 5-string

2007 Smith 4-string acoustic - my practice bass (and that's not PRS)

My rig was: (it hadn't been used in several years - will be updated with modern gear when I play out again...and I will play out again...)

SWR 350W head

SWR 4x10 cabinet

SWR 1x15 cabinet

I still use:

Ibanez Soundwave 35 - my practice amp and used to accompany a guitarist

May you always groove in the pocket and your tone be amazing. smile.gif

And, yes Jeff Berlin is *crazy* good. He used to write a good article in Bass Player magazine.

40 bucks can't go wrong. The neck looks straight and the action looks good. I have never played one before, but it looks solid. Best of luck.

I might as well post in this. I have two basses, one's a beginner that sounds decent, and the other's better.

My beginner one is a Silvertone LB11. Thing's not that great, but I still play it. Plus, I have neon strings for it, so that makes it a little better. My other is a Gretsch Junior Jet. It's a short-scale, but I still love it.

Note, I am not a former guitar player.

I'm new here, so first off, hello all.

When I first started playing bass years ago, I had an old short scale Fender MusicMaster bass, Fender's low end economy model(before Squier took over that role), and a Supro Thunder Bolt tube bass amp.

Unfortunately, it all had to be gotten rid of years ago(moving around too much at the time), and I was away from bass for several years.

Just managed to get a bass back a few weeks ago. It's a long scale Squier Jazz bass, black and white.

I've already begun the modifications to bring the cheaper components up to a better standard.

My current finances didn't allow for an amp at the same time, so for now, I practice unplugged and use my guitar amp at lower volume to record.

I don't believe I never noticed this thread before now!

The only basses I have left are my very first one a red Fender JP-90 Jazz bass my dad gave me back in 1991 and a dark blue Ibanez soundgear SR300 I got from my girlfriend almost 2 years ago. For a cheap bass under $300, the Ibanez is really awesome and it's what I play the most now.

The only amp I have left is a Fender Rumble 75. It's more than loud enough for my apartment but I used to have a Fender BXR300c which was a hell of a lot louder / better but it was stolen years ago :(

I used to play extensively with heavy picks however over the years I ended up losing most of mine and since I wasn't in a band anymore but still wanted to play and practice I just started using my fingers more and more. Now it's to the point where it's all I use to play, and picks seem weird by comparison.
