Sarah Vowell is a contributing editor to Public Radio International's This American Life, a hotbed of literary talent. This is a travelogue about her "vacations" to all the key locations from the assassinations of Presidents Lincoln, Garfield, and McKinley. Discussed are the presidents, the assassins, the industries which try to capitalize on the assassinations, little known facts, and Vowell's own experiences as she toured the sites.

One of those little-known facts: Robert Todd Lincoln was present or nearby at all three assassinations. And you thought Cousin Oliver was a jinx!

I read that back in 1987 when it was published by star books. The cover looked like a modern bible to me with a kid holding a teddy bear beneath a garish sunset. I wouldn't have bought it based on the cover but it was present. I wasn't too hopeful of it but once I started reading it I was impressed.

Here's how it looked:

Just finished Salem's Lot by Stephen King, and enjoyed it so much more than I was expecting to...

Today I'm starting on The Hitchhiker's Guide... by Douglas Adams, which I got as a Christmas gift.

Enjoy!! A great series of books.

Right now I'm in the middle of two books, The Art of War by Sun Tzu, very serious minded stuff indeed, and Rockers & Rollers by Brian Johnson of AC/DC , full of filth, cars and belly laughs.

Now that's what you call a contrast!! I got the Brian Johnson book as a Christmas present from my son, great fun.

I'm also reading Superfreakonomics by Stephen Dubner and Steven Levitt, and re-reading Not The End of the World by Christopher Brookmyre.

Just finished "Under The Dome", my favourite King book since The Stand!!

Must pick up Superfreakonomics, the first was a hoot.

Have Under The Dome for over a month now, must start it now, need to finish Micheal O Siochru's book on Cromwell first. Highly recommend it. Paints a different picture to the one we were taught in school.

I'm just finishing up A Leap In The Dark. Fascinating book, full of details about the birth of the US that they never teach you in school.

I'm giving this another try. I had taken it from the library when it was a new, 14-day loan, and barely cracked it. Now I've gotten it for Christmas. I've read all of Dennis Lehane's other books and loved them; with each new book now, he's becoming more "literary" and less "populist." And this one, his latest, is LONG.

It's about time Les wrote a survival book! I'm on page 50-something and it's really good so far. I've read a lot of survival manuals because I'm absolutely fascinated by the subject and it's rare nowadays that a new survival manual teaches me something new. This one already has done just that so I can see it becoming one of my favorites.

We were talking about the quake at supper, and my mom mentioned having read this book a long time ago. The way she talked about it, it sounds really interesting, if not a little creepy. We'll see.

The main reason that I've been reading so many survival manuals, though, is that I am in the process of starting a survival school with my Father in law, so all of this is actually research and I'm doing my utmost to learn as much as I can about the subject because it's my goal to become an expert.

That sounds like it'd be a lot of fun to take. Good luck!

Thanks, man! The way things are going we'll be launching around mid-Summer. I can't wait! We'll also be giving discounts to people we know so if you or anyone else who reads this lives in or near or can get to Northern Georgia at least farily easily, just PM me and we'll go from there.

Right now I am reading RICH DAD, POOR DAD which is a very interesting and informative books of course. One of the biggest issues for me is that being Canadian many of the specifics of his real estate assets information doesn't really apply or match up here so while I'd like to get on this path of savings and asset building it is very difficult right now especially with such dismal interest rates, I just don't know where to get started.

Got the old noodle thinking about these things though anyways!
