Albums of the year

Hatchetaxe&saw

Recommended Posts

It's been an incredible year for music, a great mixture of new bands making their mark and older artistes proving there's life in old dogs.

Here's my list.

In order of preference:

1. Rush - Snakes and Arrows (I know it's Music of the Spheres but it's my number 1, have not tired of this album, still get a shiver when Far Cry starts)

2. Explosions In The Sky - All Of A Sudden I Miss Everyone

3. Porcupine Tree - Fear Of A Blank Planet

4. Robert Wyatt - Comicopera

5. Robert Plant/Alison Krauss

6. Robert Fripp - At The End Of Time

7. Marillion - Somewhere Else

8. Bruce Springsteen - Magic

9. LCD Soundsystem - Sound OPf Silver

10. Dream Theater - Systematic Chaos

Haven't heard In Rainbows yet........

Even though Mojo and Uncut praised PT, Rush, Marillion and Explosions In The Sky when the albums came out none of these acts made their top 50 end of year poll. Hmmmmmmm.

Honourable mentions to : Richard Thompson, Arcade Fire, Arctic Monkeys, The Klaxons, Neil Young, Biffy Clyro, Seasick Steve, Foo Fighters, The Go! Team, Colin Hay, Crowded House, Ry Cooder, The Good The Bad and The Queen, The White Stripes.

Best Re-issues:

Hawkwind - Space Ritual

The Travelling Wilburies - Vol1 and 3

Trees - On The Shore

Best Live Album:

Van Der Graaf Generator - Real Time

Letdown of the Year:

Interpol - Our Love To Admire

Insufferable Bollocks of the Year Award:

Mika

I say this every year, but what the hell do people see in The Kings Of Leon?

Haha damn b, you didn't like Manipulator? It's no Doppleganger, but I still really like it. I didn't care much for the new Against Me! I saw them live again and still love them though.

I don't really keep up with much current music, so I've only heard a handful '07 albums..

Radiohead - In Rainbows

Pretty good, it's growing on me. Though I definitely don't see it replacing my love of Kid A. biggrin.gif

The National - Boxer

Amazing, probably my favorite album of the 2000s (so far of course)

Explosions In The Sky - All Of A Sudden I Miss Everyone

Pleasant, but completely forgettable.

Menomena - Friend & Foe

Sounds too much like Flaming Lips, very average.

Great Lake Swimmers - Ongiara

Not bad, it bores me quite a bit in places but I've always been a sucker for serene indie folk.

I must get Memory Almost Full. What I've heard so far is really good.

I forgot to mention Orange Goblin in my list. Their latest, Healing Through Fire is real over the top metal. Great fun.

Not a big Rush fan anymore. Fairly weak album, overall.

Especially behind that Paul McCartney album.

Probably my second or third favorite McCartney solo album of all time.
