Is The Astonishing the concept album to end all concept albums?

Nope.

It's the little pet project of Petrucci and Rudess.

The other three members of the band are just like "you still paying me? Cool! Then whatever with this thing, i'll do my job".

it's a broadway/disney movie more then just a concept record actually.

cheesy as anything you will ever hear.....but i love it.

Mick

It's a Rock Opera! They wanted to call it Judas Christ Super Mart!

Begin Again is the 17th ballad on the album, I think it's time to ring the Guiness Book of Records!

Its not for you, I get it.

I have posted positive points Ticky but you're ignoring those aren't you? Go back and read them and quote those too.

Right, this is my fifth (I think) time of listening to disc one.

It is sinking in, this is actually quite beautiful. Definitley recommend taking this album a disc at a time, with a patient ear.

The Dream Theater forums is greatly in favor of the album. An album of this nature is going to be met with mixed reaction because it goes against the grain of the bands usual fare. That's why I dig it!

Me too. i hear a lot of not Ambitious enough comments.

to me this is a great risk after the last record which was pretty straight forward for DT.

This entire piece has one negative that I never thought I'd say about any album: it has almost too much melody. At least, that's how it seems for me. It feels like it's saturated in a syrup of melody, instead of presenting anything interesting or challenging. The only thing truly challenging about this is its length, and that's not really a good challenge. There are a few songs that avoid this, but not enough on a 34-song record to really alter the tone.

Our New World is pretty good.

How do we feel about Mangini now after three albums? Is Portnoy better?

Emotional feel, I would say yes.

Outright skill level, Mangini is more technically proficient.

I don't hear that much that impresses me from Mangini. I almost don't notice him on these albums half the time, which may be a good thing or a bad thing depending on what he's playing and what he's playing over.

Mangini has always been the better fit then Portnoy to me.

Portnoy was more Flashy/emotional yes.

i enjoy Mangini more. He's more machine like. but Everything he does fits the song he's playing. he plays for the song.

To see him perform live really shows how amazing a drummer he is. He can just do things skill wise Mike can't. But that's not knocking Mike. I love Mikes playing.

Finally got to listen to it a little in my car...maybe the first five or six tunes...right off the bat, I WILL say that listening to it "open air" and not with ear buds IS a big difference...but I will ALSO say...the drum sound is freaking HORRIBLE! Sounds like that triggered crap that they used for Images and Words...That snare sound is just grating on the ears! Doesn't anyone know how to records a snare drum so it SOUNDS like a snare drum anymore?!?!? yeeeesh! Too much gating if you ask me....

Also so far..the fact that one song sort of melds into another puts me into a "just make one big tune" kind of thing. So it's not an album to have in your "random" folder on your iPod.
