Coldplay - Moon Music

Okay… I overreacted the other night. This is no masterpiece, and won’t stand up to their best works, but they’re chasing something really special on a bit over half of this. The dancier numbers like Good Feelings and Aeterna don’t do a whole lot for me, but I don’t mind them too much. The two lead singles, feelslikeimfallinginlove and We Pray are pretty much just what I expect from Coldplay. Well produced, catchy, a few nice details and that’s kinda it. The real meat of the album though is alarmingly beautiful. Moon Music, Jupiter, Rainbow, iAAM, All My Love, and One World are the raison d’etre for a new Coldplay album in 2024. No, it’s not poetry, perhaps even less so than it’s ever been, but the overwhelmingly positive sentiments set over such gorgeous arrangements are powerful if you let them be. Some of these aren’t even really songs, they’re closer to Explosions In The Sky than Adele. Others of course are very much pop song rule followers, but they come from the solo McCartney school of songwriting that gave us Silly Love Songs. And what’s wrong with that? And sure, Jupiter isn’t exactly news to anyone, but it’s really sweet to hear Coldplay write a song specifically affirming LGBTQ+ people, and it’s pretty. So… well done Coldplay, you have won me over yet again, lol.

I’m such an easy sell for this band.

Worked from home again today so back to the vinyl in the moving box's.  For the most part of the day at least.  First out of the box:

KISS - Crazy Night

Enjoyable title track.  It also has "Reason To Live", "Good Girl Gone Bad" & "Turn on The Night" which are also decent.  "Turn On The Night" is (IMO) the best song on the record.  The rest of the album does nothing for me though.  Next out of the box:

Great White - Once Bitten

This has "Rock Me" & "Lady Red Light" which are decent.  Lady Red Light is the better song (IMO).  Otherwise the album is just filler.  Even back in the day it did nothing for me and it has not aged well.  Next out of the box:

Great White - Twice Shy

This has "Once Bitten Twice Shy" which is decent.  Beyond that their are some ok vocals (RIP Jack Russel, the lead singer of Great White who passed away recently), an ok riff here and there and a few decent drum fills.  But basically its all filler.  Like their first album it did not do much for me back in the day and its not aged well.  Next out of the box:

Pat Benatar - Get Nervous

This has "Shadows of the Night" which is enjoyable.  Otherwise its basically all filler (despite some good vocal work).  Not worth listening to.

This finished off a moving box.  Rather than start on another box I decided to listen to some albums I just got last night.  First vinyl up:

Sabaton - Heroes

Decent album.  Hey, its Sabaton (who I have enjoyed the 2 times I have seen them live) and they play power metal (exactly my metal taste).  The fact that they are a history metal band adds to my enjoyment (like reading history).  So I should and did enjoy the album.  Nothing really jumped out but it was all round decent.  Perhaps the weakest song was their cover of "For whom The Bell Tolls".  The next (and last) album for the day was then:

Rage Against the Machine - Rage Against The Machine

Not very familiar with this group.  I know of them but the very little I have heard is not really my cup of tea.  I know Tom Morello is supposed to be a great guitarist and I have heard they are in your face with left wing beliefs (which appeals to me - I am very left wing) so I decided to give this album a shot.  I tend to be into traditional metal & hard rock, prog hard rock, power metal, symphonic metal, folk metal & prog metal.  Plus some classic rock and AOR.  So the music was not my cup of tea - not at all.  The vocals turned me off as well.  But some of the lyrics appealed to me (esp. the tune "Wake Up").  Since the store had a few other albums from this group I may go get them and give them a try.

The other day (when I listened to Queensryche's Empire, Priest Heading out to the Highway, Maiden's Piece of Mind etc) was great.  Today was the reverse - a real dud.  But I figured I would at least mention the albums and what I thought.  The best of the (bad) day?  Sabaton.  Clearly Sabaton.  Rage Against The Machine was a very distant second.

What did God say when he got smacked? And who is powerful enough to land a smack that he would notice?
