Entre_Perpetuo Posted October 7 Posted October 7 The Warning - Keep Me Fed First listen (finally got around to it). Very initial reaction: I like it. I probably liked their last two better, but I like this too and I’m glad it’s different. These are basically contemporary pop songs on top with something approximating modern radio metal underneath. It’s well made, and meticulously polished, and that’s commendable. I guess my hope would be that as they go forward they just go all out if they want to make a pop record, rather than trying to split the difference with their heavier roots. 1

I don't hear pop songs on here. More and Burnout definitely lean in that direction but this album has what are probably their heaviest riffs to date. They've always had the melodic hooks in their songs anyways so this really isn't much different. I could see Pau doing a solo album that is completely pop one day but I don't think Dany and Ale will stand for it under The Warning name. Edited October 8 by J2112YYZ

It’s not the fact that the hooks are melodic, it’s the kind of melodies and the phrasing especially that sound pop to me. Much moreso than their past two records. Especially Shark and Hell You Call A Dream. I mean there’s a bit of the chorus of the latter that sounds like a Taylor Swift melody. I’m not complaining about it either, but I do think it’s there. As for the heaviest riffs, I dunno maybe? Some of the guitar tones are pretty thick, and the riffs are good, but they tend to feel ancillary to the songs to me. Less like features and more like building blocks. Maybe a hot take but I also don’t think that’s new for The Warning. They don’t have many songs where I walk away remembering the riff so much as the melody. Kinda like early Panic! At The Disco. There are good riffs in there, but they’re not the main focus. I probably just committed sacrilege, lol 1

Mick There is no shame in them sounding like pop. I don't really hear how anyone could deny this band is slick and commercial. They are, based on a cursory glance at this album, heading for Paramore like pop rock status. But like...was this band ever anything but basic? Again, not a bad thing. It's just the adoration this band gets is interesting to me because I've always heard the most generic leanings in their sound, but fans act like they are on the cusp of a revolution. 3

Yeah like I said, I don’t find it very new for them. It’s just finally crossed the line into sounding so commercial that I kinda want to hear them just go for it, like Paramore’s self titled. I will say though, their second album had some much less commercial choices across most of it. I feel like they had a darker sense of harmony on it, and some more lush instrumentation. That one’s worth a full listen through if you want to hear what I think makes them special. 2

TheAccountant Posted October 8 Posted October 8 Worked from home today so that gave me a chance to keep listening to vinyl from the moving box's (plus listen to some vinyl I picked up last night). First for the day (and out of the moving box): Ozzy - Just Say Ozzy A nice live EP recorded with Zakk Wylde, Geezer Butler & Randy Castillo. 6 live songs from a show that was recorded in November 1989. Saw Ozzy on that tour and the show was very good (not a shock). So is this album. Next out of the moving box: Van Halen - Van Halen I am not a big VH fan - perhaps if I had seen the live I would like them more but the only time I really had the chance was with Sammy on the 5150 tour and I passed on the opportunity. Anyway, its been a few years since I actually listened to the album and sitting down today I can hear why it was such a big deal when it came out. Must have been amazingly fresh sounding. Some very good songs (Eruption, You Really Got Me, Jamie's Crying, Runnin' With The Devil) but also some stuff that does not do a lot for me. Overall a very good album but I stand by how I voted a while back in a "Who's debut album was better - VH or Boston" poll. I voted for Boston and I stand by that. Next up was something I bought last night: Rage Agains the Machine - Evil Empire Like the Rage Against the Machine album I listened to last week (their debut album), the vocals don't do anything for me, the song structures don't do anything for me. Some ok lyrics and some ok instrumental work but nothing I went wild for. Basically a dud. Next up another album I bought last night: Rage Against the Machine - The Battle of LA Again the vocals don't do anything for me. The lyrics are actually fairly decent however (definitely to my left wing taste). Their is some ok instrumental work - the best of the 3 albums from them. Not a thrilling album but clearly the best of the 3 albums from this group I have heard. Next it was back to the moving box: The Who - Live at Leeds Much more to my taste. Just wish it was the entire concert - it just can't be. But its a heck of a good album. No wonder its legendary. Last out of the box for the day: CCR - Live in Eurpoe CCR recorded live in Europe in September 1971. Good album. Best live album of the day? As good as CCR was, Ozzy was way better. As good as Ozzy was, The Who were still better. So The Who win out. Best studio album? Obviously VH. 2
