Worked from home again today so back to the moving box for more vinyl.  First out:

Journey - Raised on Radio

I have said it b4 and will say it again, things may have started to go wrong with Frontiers but they really went wrong with this album,  The artwork does nothing for me.  Then there is the music.  Be Good To Yourself is an enjoyable song.  Girl Can't Help It and I'll Be Alright Without You are barely tolerable.  The rest of the album is filler.  The fundamental problem was that issues between Steve Perry and Neal Schon had just hit a breaking point.

Neal Schon had broken on the scene when, as a 15 year old guitar prodigy, he had played with Carlos Santna at Woodstock (yes - that is correct).  So his musical roots were fusion and some prog rock.  But he had transitioned to what became AOR with a hard rock influence in Journey before Steve Perry was brought in.  Perry had musical roots that were more soft rock and he wanted to be a, well, crooner.  Jonathan Cain had bridged the gap and for a while it more than worked.  Yes, Perry forced out Ansley Dunbar (very good drummer) but together they put out a lot of good music.

With Frontiers Perry started pushing for more and more control.  He and Schon locked horns over the title and art work.  Schon got the tile he wanted but Perry got the art work he wanted (bad move).  With this album Perry got basically everything (another bad move).  Ever notice that with their post Perry albums they returned (in terms of the cover art) to a style thats more in line with the pre Frontiers style?  Thats because Perry was gone.  Also, this album has multiple bass players and drummers.  Another sign of the conflict going on.  I stand by what I have said in the past - this is a real dud of an album.

Anyway, after this album the rest of the day was devoted to boots.  First out of the box:

Def Leopard

Side 1 is a live recording from a 1978 (yes, 1978 - pre On Though The Night) BBC session.  Side 2 is another BBC session from 1983.  Excellent stuff.  The songs consist of:

Too many Jitterbugs

Hello America

Rock Brigado

Overture

Gotcha Rocks Off

Rock Rock (Till You Drop)

Billys Got a Gun

Foolin

Let It Go

Wasted

Very good.  Next out of the box:

Journey - Traveling In The Universe Of Music

Recorded in Philadelphia in 1984.  The set list consist contains:

Edge Of The Blade

Escape

Don't Stop Believing

Stone in Love

Keep on Runnin'

Chain Reaction

Wheel in The Sky

Line of Fire

Separate Ways

Lovin', Touchen', Squeein'

Good album.  Next out of the box:

Bruce Dickinson - World Tour 1990

Bruce touring to support his first solo album (which I think is very good).  Recorded in Frankfurt on July 5th 1990.  Set list contains:

Born in 58

Licin The Gun

Gypsy Rd

Dive!! Dive!! Dive!!

Zulu Lulu

Son Of a Gun

Hell on Wheels

All The Young Dudes

Tattooed Millionaire

No Lies

Fog on the Tyne

Winds Of Change

Sin City

Wishing Well

Black Night

Best part is when Bruce asks the crowd "Did any of you just watch the World Cup football match between W. Germany and England?"  Crowd goes nuts.  Bruce then goes "Yeah, f**k I hated the result but I got to say that was the best match of this world cup.  It was a hell of a match.  W Germany all I can say is, as a Englishman, I hope you beat the shit out of Argentina in the final."  Crowd goes nuts again.

Very good album.  Last out of the box:

G n'R - At Castle Donnington

Recorded on Auigust 20, 1988.  Set list contains:

Its So Easy

Mr. Brownstone

f***ing Crazy

Paradise City

Welcome To The Jungle

Patience

Sweet Child of Mine

Can't be the entire set list.

I saw G n'R in the summer of 1988 and was not impressed.  Not a thrilling show either but then again g n'r is a group that has not aged well with me.

Best album of the day?  Tie Between Def Leopard and Bruce Dickinson.

Alice In Chains- Black Gives Way To Blue

I was stunned by this! Haven't played it since it came out fifteen years ago. It's wonderful!

Pearl Jam- Ten (Redux)

Turning an album I already loved into a fresh new experience, this is my vote for best remaster ever. f**k I love it.

My number album ever? Since my first listen in 2005, it's hard to deny it has endured unlike any other album from my teens. It very well might be at this point!

Dream Theater - Images & Words

I totally get why this has the reputation more broadly as “the” DT record, but as a fan I can’t help but hear it as a band with superpowers still honing in on their identity. That doesn’t make it bad, but it means stuff like Take The Time and Metropolis I and Learning To Live feel kinda lawless compared to later DT albums.

It's easy listening, that's what is in its favour. Their best?

That is also in their favour 🤣

Dream Theater - Scenes From A Memory

You know what, this is at least an order of magnitude greater than Images & Words. Absolute masterpiece. 10/10.

Is it my favorite? No I’d hand that to Awake just personally, but it’s a very close second.

Dream Theater- Black Clouds And Silver Linings

This was once my favourite DT album. Last time I played it, I felt underwhelmed and came to the conclusion that it helped me get into DT, but it's not close to their best. That stance hasn't changed, but I do still have a soft spot for it.

Pearl Jam- No Code

This album is fab

Rush- Clockwork Angels

Having discovered Rush in 2011, I am so grateful that I discovered them just in time to be hyped and enjoy an album cycle from these guys. I love this band a lot, and in 2012, I declared this album was my favourite of the year. Then I dipped with it and I struggled with the album, and now, twelve years later, it's come full circle and i am a huge fan of this album again.

Brilliant work.
