Judas Priest- Invincible Shield

Firepower was magnificent. I think JP are on fire. They just released ANOTHER instant classic.

I've played the singles endlessly for weeks. Normally that leads to a rather dull first time listen for new album, but I love all those songs, and the rest of the album is, honestly, faultless. Two classics back to back, impressed!

Who was the other band, Saxon?

Saxon has some great albums (not huge on the latest).

I enjoy modern Maiden, but nothing post-80s truly matches the classics for me.

Judas Priest - Invincible Shield

I think Firepower was better on first listen, but this is no disappointment at all. A reaffirmation that JP are still incredible. Particularly impressive guitar solos across the board, and somehow Rob sounds younger? Makes you wonder why more bands can’t be this great this late in the game. I imagine this will be a cut above any other new album from a “legacy act” I hear this year. For comparison, I’d spin this ten times before ever bothering with that latest Stones album again.

Judas Priest- Painkiller

Judas Priest- Angel Of Retribution

Judas Priest- Firepower

Judas Priest- Invincible Shield

This was a terrific listen! I skipped the Ripper albums and Nostradamus and Redeemer. These four albums really work well as a marathon! Had a great time with them all.

Is it sacrilege to say, I sorta think Angel is my fave?

Bob Dylan - Blood On The Tracks

A lesser songwriter attempting a similar thing would have such severely worse results it wouldn’t be worth a second listen. The record rides almost single-handedly on the power of Dylan’s voice and words, and it’s a masterpiece because of it.

IMO no - not sacrilege.  Not what I would say but to each there own.  But I would agree its a good album.  Now, from the albums you mentioned I would say Firepower is the best BUT I have yet listened to Invincible Shield.  I would however listen to Redeemer and perhaps Nostradamus but would totally skip Painkiller.  Its not my cup of tea.

Got to admit though - I took off early from work today to find a record store that might have Invincible Shield.  I think its the first time I took off early from work to by an album since CA by Rush came out.  The first FYE (back in the day this chain was a great record store) did not have it.  The second one did not but I found Bruce Dickinson's "The Mandrake Project" so I bought that.  While paying I was talking with the cashier and mentioned Invincible Shield.  She then told me to go to the comic book store in the same mall and said it had a better record and CD collection then her store.  Good advice - got Invincible Shield at the comic book store plus picked up "Killing The Dragon" by Dio.  So now I have new (or at least for me new) albums with 3 GREAT singers to listen to when I get the chance. Heck of a good day!!

A multi-coloured shield surrounded by fire and light with Judas Priest's logo on it against a blue and red background

HOLY SHIT!  This is all my favorite parts of Turbo, Painkiller and Firepower with a few new twists!  Easily my FAVORITE Priest album.  Way to go boys! 10/10

Sonata-Arctica-Clear-Cold-Beyond.jpg?fit

It's their shortest album to date, so it leaves a little to be desired... But other than that pretty good. Not a return to the golden years like they so heavily advertised, but then again I didn't buy into all that noise that much anyway. Definitely one their better post-Jani works... :(

As great as some of this is, it just isn't up to the quality they've produced from By The Way onward...controversial, I know!

Did...did...did they release this the same day as Invincible Shield?

Choices, lol

Saying that, I still absolutely adore this band. As someone who actually loved The Ninth Hour, it's disappointing to me how flat the last album was for me, and I'm not remotely interested in this. But...I will try it.

In Flames- I, The Mask

Judas Priest- Invincible Shield

And now:

Sonata Arctica- Cold Clear Beyond

Oh dear...I love this band, but they are trying too hard to replicate their early days. Identity crisis, much?

But...gasp...it is reminding me why I loved them. It sorta slots nicely into the early era. Great for fans who missed that era, maybe a bit too late to repeat their success?

It bridges the gap between new Sonata and old Sonata imo - similar to how Pariah's Child did, but in a more direct way. Aside from the speed and some of their classic power metal song structure motifs coming back, along with some faster solos... It really can't pass as "classic" Sonata Arctica. Silence was the gold standard imo, and i am the typical fan who does believe their first four albums are their best work and always will be.

You're lucky you went into this blind. For months now Tony has been in dozens of interviews, many with small youtube channels even, promoting that "Old Sonata is back" and saying stuff like "I regret Unia and everything following it, I was ignoring the fans"... But as I've said before, Elias/Henkka cannot do what Jani/Mikko did, they can tap upon it with songs like "First in Line" and "Rise a Night" for example, but they still cannot, or refuse to, do what Jani/Mikko did for the sound of the band, which was easily half of the magic. Elias's playing on this album is still obviously Elias's and not Jani's, he's stubborn with his aggressive guitar tones and in your face riffs, rather than working with the rest of the band to make a complete atmospheric sound. Same goes for Henkka with his keyboards, the band sounds more fragmented now than it does unified, and that's been a problem they've had for a while now.

Anyway, I wouldn't be so critical of the album if it weren't for the fact that they heavily pushed the idea that it was going to be old Sonata - but I'm not disappointed either because I didn't fully buy in to that narrative, I knew it wasn't possible. It's a great album for what it is. 4 of the songs might need some warming up to (I'm not enjoying Cure For Everything & Angel Defiled much, and the last two songs on the album sound very "Talviyo" which is an album I hardly enjoyed at all...), but other than it's a great, brief album.. I got more than I would have ever expected from them at this point.
