treeduck
There's Sabbath and Priest of course, but who were the other heavy bands of the 70's?

Entre_Perpetuo
Let's think Sabbath Priest Purple Zeppelin BOC UFO Crimson Rush Heep Rainbow I'd love to toss Queen in there for the first two albums especially, but I'm not quite sure how they stack up. They'd be top 20 for sure.
invisible airwave
Get some punk rock in there like Ramones and early Clash.
blueschica
UFO, Rainbow, Deep Purple, AC/DC, Motorhead. I think also Blue Oyster Cult; I would include them. Maybe Nazareth, and probably Van Halen? Edited April 21, 2022 by blueschica

I veered from punk, but if we count it there's the proto punk of Death (Detroit), Stooges, MC5, Rocket From the Tombs, etc. Or Australia with Radio Birdman, Rose Tattoo
zepphead
Nobody has mentioned Grand Funk Railroad - they had their heavy moments.

Entre_Perpetuo
The Stooges! Van Halen! Ah how did I forget them? Also I'd argue The Sex Pistols had a heavier tone than The Ramones or The Clash, even if you couldn't actually take them seriously. Motorhead of course has to be in there, don't know why I didn't think of them.

Entre_Perpetuo
Imagine how Pete Townsend must've felt when he first heard Zeppelin or Sabbath, after having previously been able to claim to have the heaviest rock song ever under his belt (I Can See For Miles), and realizing heavy music had already moved away from what The Who were feasibly capable of producing.
