J2112YYZ
Yes. Although never officially labeled as progressive metal, a lot of what Rush did from COS through Hemispheres was certainly an early form of the genre. Entre_Perpetuo
yeah sure, whatever. For that ending section, Cygnus is basically metal.
Lucas
Not only is Cygnus metal, it is the standard which all others are measured

Eel Yddeg
Not the whole song. The ending section is some of Rush's heaviest music, however.
Nate2112
No. Rush has metalesque sections, but they aren't a metal band. Cygnus X-1 is certainly heavy, but not really metal. A good blend of hard rock and progressive rock. I hope Earl doesn't kill me

PolarizeMe
I would've said yes a decade ago, but with the other genres/types of music I've tapped into in since, I'm now of the opinion that heaviness doesn't necessarily imply that a band or song is metal. For example, industrial music is what I'd consider heavy but unless you're Godflesh, KMFDM, or Ministry, it's not remotely metal or specifically industrial metal. Certainly there's parts (i.e. the ending section) that sounds metal for its time, but for the most part I'd consider it "hardened" prog rock. For my ambivalence, I voted unsure but Rush are certainly IMO the bridge between prog rock and prog metal. Lucas
How cute - to see the opinions of those who weren't even born in 1977 talking as if they know because they have the internet and have read about it .. Sorry kiddies, just because metal has "evolved" ( for lack of a better term ) doesn't mean Rush was not metal in 1977 or even still today .. I came to Rush via a metal band, Mastodon, giving Moving Pictures the highest praise. Not sure how anyone could fail to note that, particularly for the time period, the music is very metal. Even reading articles from the time, mthe "metal" tag is used a lot. Its not even an argument...just listen to Bastille Day for goodness sake!
