Ancient Ways
Fave part is when physical graffiti, EW&F the way of the world, Elton John captain fantastic, and Eagles were all in same period. Wish we had that kind of mix these days.
Lucas
You know things have degraded when the "NOW That's What I Call Music" series has become the most consistent Number One seller . . Edited May 27, 2016 by Lucas
The Cat 3
It was so interesting to see what was best selling and when... ...also what was going on when they were released. Nice thread Custom55, thanks!

Wish we had that kind of mix these days. I noted a lack of diversity from the mid 90s through sometime mid 2000s, then it seems that the American Idol crowd helped inject a bit of diversity back into the top album sales. But still, holy heck there's a lot of hip hop/rap and country, both of which I see as music targeted/appealing to the lowest common denominator. Says a lot about where we are as a country right now, what we value in the arts, find 'entertaining', etc.

Golden age for my tastes... probably most of us here.

foghorn-leghorn
I thought the Stones would be bigger than Elton John in the 70's. Great stuff. Any doubt the 70's were the "golden years" of great music?
stoopid
I didn't see Dark Side of the Moon on their either, which is amazing since it was on the charts for so long and sold so many copies. I wonder if it's the highest grossing album to never reach #1.

That One Guy
No Rush at all? :oMaybe they may have had a smidgen of a chance that one summer that Moving Pictures was hot. Otherwise, no.
Ancient Ways
I tend to think of the 90s as the era of grunge but you can't tell that looking at this list. Hard to believe that one of the more influential albums of the 90s (nevermind) was only number 1 for 2 weeks.

Hard to believe that one of the more influential albums of the 90s (nevermind) was only number 1 for 2 weeks. There are a lot of albums starting in the '80s that sold multi-platinum that only spent a few weeks on the charts. Live's "Throwing Copper" is a good example, I think they ending up selling like 8 million copies. I guess I'd rather have a slow burner than a firecracker when it comes to chart success.
