Pathetic, right? People actually care about this shit nationally? laugh.gif

I was there yesterday and barely anyone was actually watching, I went on the ferris wheel with my lady and the was the only enjoyable part. I can't believe we stayed there for more than 40 minutes. I actually met up with my mom at one brief point and she couldn't agree with me more, though she was in a very optimistic mood as usual, "Fairs are so silly. You eat a bunch of junk food, go on a ride, and then barf it up."

My hometown (Rocky Mount, NC) is known for the birthplace of jazz great Thelonious Monk, band leader Kay Kaiser, and was the headquarters of Hardee's burger chain. Rocky Mount had the second ever Hardee's restaurant with the first being founded in Greenville, NC.

My hometown's known for a couple of things....a couple that might be interesting.

The first thing it's known for was an incident back in the 80s (I think 1986) where 4 high school students killed themselves in a pact suicide by trapping themselves inside a car with carbon monoxide. It later inspired a book about the incident; it was called Teenage Wasteland, but it's full of shit that ain't true according to those who knew those kids. Allegedly, my hometown was one of the more dangerous places in northern New Jersey to live in back in the 80s/90s but since then, it mellowed down significantly.

It was the place that Al Di Meola grew up in and he was also an alumni at the high school I just graduated from. Bob Gaudio, formerly of The Four Seasons is also an alumni (I believe he dropped out to join the band).

The longest held prisoner of war in US history was from my hometown (he later moved to Florida before he passed away in 2002)

The fourth and last major thing was my town was featured on Extreme Makeover: Home Edition in 2006.

But other than those 4, my town's known for having an excellent music and fine arts department (especially in the high school) and some 80s/90s hardcore band called Mucky Pup.

Oysterfest!

http://www.oysterfest.org/

I helped organize the first ever oysterfest back in the 80's. My dad was a Rotarian and I was a Rotary exchange student. Cool to see it's still going on.

These festivals are goofy, but great traditions that help build a sense of community. Europe's full of them, and I think they are great fun.

Surrey, British Columbia: best known for being a wretched hive of scum and villainy. I guess there's a rodeo, too. Nothing else really noteworthy about it despite being a city of almost 500,000.

Rodeo, miniature train, and the Surrey Museum! Plus...

Surrey Fusion Festival is Surrey's multicultural celebration with plenty of international pavilions celebrating music, food and culture. Last year's incredibly successful event was attended by over 90,000 people and was truly a highlight of the summer. Join the festivities for two full days of amazing music including music by international British pop and R&B superstar Jay Sean and the JUNO Award winning group, Bedouin Soundclash.

My town is famous for the Boyd & Parker ambush. They were a part of the Sullivan expedition and were captured and killed by Native Americans along with 15 of their men. Boyd infamously had his intestines tied to a tree and was forced to run around it until he died. Fun piece of local history. Oh, as well as the creation of the Red Cross & the Pledge of Allegiance. All originated from this small county.

My birthplace of Bridgeport, CT is known as the birthplace of Subway restaurants, the frisbee, and naturally the Bridgeport Machining Co, makers of a shitload of reliable milling machines that even my company in Kentucky use.

My hometown of Monroe, CT is known as the home of Ed and Lorraine Warren, famous paranormal investigators, and is the location of the Swiss Army (knives) world headquarters.

Haven't had a chance to go to Fusion Fest yet, but the Canada Day celebrations are pretty awesome. Big free outdoor concert on the rodeo grounds. Trooper played last year, they rocked. For all my complaints about this city they can put on some damn good festivals.

My town is home to the Augusta National and the Masters golf tournament, as well as the birthplace of the Godfather of Soul, James Brown.

Oh, and for those of you who like jazz/fusion, the Dixie Dregs trace their origins to Augusta.
