I chose "Love it!" I've certainly warmed up to the album since I first heard it; a large part of my opinion of it is because of reading Ghost Rider. Knowing what Neil experienced prior to Vapor Trails, and all that he (and the band) had been through before that point, gave me a deeper appreciation of the album born from those hardships. heart.gif

It's not everyone's cup of tea, but it's mine. tongue.gif

I've really grown to love it since adding it to my latest ipod batch of music (reminds me, I need to change to a new batch soon). Out of my whopping 2 gigs of music (about 14 random albums), Vapor Trails (and Geddy's My Favorite Headache) is the only selection of songs that I'm not skipping. Each time one of those babies pops up I'm in a little bit of music heaven.

Vapor Trails is probably in my top three Rush albums, and the more I listen to it, the more I like it. I've found it interesting, too, how my favourite album songs have changed since first hearing it: first song that grabbed me was 'Ghost Rider', then 'Earthshine', then 'Peaceable Kingdom', then 'Ceiling Unlimited' (and I made a whole thread about that song!), and now 'Freeze' and 'How It Is'.

I definitely can't say I dislike it or hate it. I think so much of Rush that I could not have negative feelings about even their worst work (which I think it is). I thought about saying I was indifferent about it, but again, just thinking of who it is makes me positive about it. I was talking on Facebook to some people about which Rush albums I'd bring to a desert island, and I thought about this for a minute: is there even one song I could TOTALLY leave behind and never listen to again?

Nope. Not even Freeze. There are times I even want to hear that "intoooo thaaa niiiiight". There would be times on that island that, even if I had all their other 160-some-odd songs, I'd miss that one.

So, I vote like it, meaning that it's okay, and my least favorite, but it's still Rush, and therefore worth something. I'd still listen to Vapor Trails before a LOT of other music, just not as much as any other Rush, or a lot of my other favorite bands' work.

I voted like. I don't hate anything Rush has released, but I'm not a big fan of most 90's and 2000's modern rock/metal and I prefer 70's and 80's Rush. VT has grown on me the last 4 or 5 years. I still don't love it but I don't hate it. It's just kinda there.....

I wonder how many like it just because it's Rush?

That is part of the equation for sure, but not "just because...".

I think it's a VERY fair question. Some people will absolutely refuse to dislike a Rush album, or they will listen to it many, many times until they grow to appreciate it, and hence "like" it.

Even I listened to it a LOT more times than I would have if it were anything other than a Rush album. If it was any other band, I never would have gotten past listen 1, and maybe not even that far. But, because it's Rush, and because I don't ever want to dislike anything Rush, I persevered, trying desperately to fall in love with the album, especially after 6 years of waiting. For me, it was all for nothing, but for others they grew to like it or appreciate it, or at least tolerate it. Hell, some even love it, and they did on the first listen. confused13.gif

When I first came on TRF, which was only maybe 3 years after VT came out, I assumed it would be a given that everyone thought VT was the heartbreaking, embarrassing, disastrous clusterf*ck of an album that I did, and I was deeply, deeply shocked to find so many people liked it or loved it. It still blows my mind. I seriously do not get it. Sometimes it really makes me question people's sanity or think that it's fanboyism run rampant. I do accept that lots of Rush fans, many of who are good friends of mine sincerely do like it or love it, however, so I know they're not really crazy, but sometimes it does makes me wonder. There are Rush albums I don't like that I can understand why people like, but not this one. unsure.gif

Maybe it is time to revisit the album? wink.gif Since you hate it that much I guess you havent given it a listen for years upon years.

I had also many issues with VT. After it was released I listened to it maybe 20-30 times, and I couldnt crack it. Then, I think I liked it because it was Rush.

In the last years I have almost not listened to it all. Maybe once every second year.

Half a year ago I picked it out again and found that the songs have aged well. There is so much gold in the songs that is buried under that bad production!

Alas, such has been suggested to me many times on TRF, and in the past I took up people's challenge several times. I listened to it again... and again... and again... At some point I had to ask myself why I was torturing myself, and I stopped trying.

Seriously, take an album that you've heard once or twice that you really didn't like by some group other than Rush. Now, go listen to that album 15 times and try to get to like it. Sounds crazy, right? That's what people do. Hell, that's what I did. That's what people want me to do. Why? How many times do you have to beat your head against a wall to know that it hurts? I'm glad that you eventually got to like it, but I'm just not enough of a masochist to keep at it. There's too much great music out there that I don't have to work so hard at, ya know?

That's not necessarily the case. There are PLENTY of albums by other bands I had to work to love, and eventually I did. Many artists like Gentle Giant, Van der Graff Generator, Yes, King Crimson, Captain Beefheart, Sun Ra, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, and plenty of others took time and work.

The difference is, and it's a crucial difference, is that for each one of those albums that I grew to love, there was something about them that initially intrigued me, a feeling that they actually might be something really special if I could just understand them. I knew there was something I was missing that I just wasn't getting yet, and it was enough to keep me going at it until they finally clicked!

Nothing ever intrigued me about VT. If I hate an album after 2 or 3 listens, I usually give up because, you know, why bother?

With VT I did try way more times than necessary AND ONLY because it's Rush. I WANT to love every Rush album. I did from Rush through HYF, with the exception of a small handful of songs. After that, I only like or love 2 out of the last 6. It's not for lack of trying or wanting to. Some people love 18 out of 18. I love 14 out of 18. Still, that ain't bad...

FFS, can this thread *please* not turn into a "let's convince goobs to listen to VT again BECAUSE WE CAN'T ALLOW HIM TO NOT LIKE IT!!!"? Please?

Bravo!

It's nauseating, patronising and unnecessary.

So Gary doesn't like VT. So f***ing what?
