Stumbled across Cronenberg's The Fly this weekend after the kids went to bed. So great. It was part of an amazing run of dark horror/sci-fi (or just sci-fi) that also included Alien, Bladerunner, and The Thing.

At first I was thinking "this isn't as mind-bending as I've come to expect from Christopher Nolan"....but then towards the end I was like, "Ah, there we go."

And it only took 11 Hours.....zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Mission: Impossible

It is odd, I love the three sequels but I just do not like this first one, despite a stellar cast.

M:I2 is my favourite of the entire franchise. Tandie Newton...nomnomnmnom

This film features probably the best and most realistic and brutal fight scene in cinema history between Rod Taylor and William Smith. And the reason it's so good is because it WAS real, with real punches, real bruises and real blood and real lost teeth. Smith ended up with broken ribs and Taylor ended up with a broken nose. It started off as a normal staged fight but someone landed a real punch somewhere and the other actor responded with one of his own! When Bruce Lee saw this scene he made sure the Director of the film Robert Clause became the director of Enter the Dragon which he did. The part of Roper was going to be offered to Taylor or Smith but in the end John Saxon got the role. And if you don't think these guys are tough in reality I'll tell you Rod Taylor beat the crap out of football legend Jim Brown, with ease, on the set of another film!

And here is the Darker Than Amber Fight scene (some of the best stuff was edited out but you can tell it's not a "normal" movie fight):

And here's what Smith had to say about it:

The classic fight between Rod Taylor and I in “Darker Than Amber.” That was a different story. Fight choreography and staging went out the window when Rod decided to really hit me. And so the fight was on. That was a real fight with real blood and real broken bones. Rod is a skilled fighter, and, at the same time a real scrapper. Now that was a good fight!

We didn't use any stunt doubles at all. [Taylor] broke three of my ribs and I busted his nose ... but you don't even get to see it in [the cut] version. After he busted three of my ribs, I hit him with a bottle, a real one. ... He busted three of my goddamn ribs and I couldn't even breath and he was still hitting me. ...

[Later...] When he whacked me with that board, he missed the knee pad and hit me [just below the knee]. To this day when I talk to him, I accuse him of doing it on purpose. Luckily that was the last take of the whole movie.

Cool story. That was a pretty impressive fight.

Edge Of Tommorow with Tom Cruise. Pretty good movie, except the last scene. Dammit, why did the have to show him waking up, like it was a dream. Arrrrgh. Edited by Ayn Rand
