Always thought Nantucket Sleighride was a cracking rock album; anyone else agree or disagree?

I only heard their first album "climbing". It had some good songs on it, but not anything great imo.

'Mississippi Queen' is a good song. Probably, Mountain's best known song.

Leslie West has tone a mile wide. My friends had a band in the 70s that got to open for them one night. Would have gone, but I was a bout 2 or 3 at the time.

Felix Pappalardi was no slouch himself! Personally, I think Pappalardi's bass gave a distinct standout sound to Mountain's early work as much as did West. I want to say Pappalardi played Gibson EB and those '60's EBs had such a deep fat resonating sound.

Btw, I've got a '64 Gibson EB-0. cool.gif The neck has a slight twist, unfortunately. sad.gif But the bass is almost as old as me and I've a slight creak in my neck, too, so I love it, anyhow smile.gif

Not so much underrated but nearly forgotten.

What a powerhouse they were.

Nearly. Mississippi Queen still shows up on lots of classic rock compilations, though. Like this one, which was left in the CD player of a pre-owned car I bought last fall. It became the soundtrack for our father-son road trip:

*1: "Sweet Home Alabama" - Lynyrd Skynyrd

*2: "Ramblin' Man" - Allman Brothers

*3: "You Ain't Seen Nothin' Yet" - Bachman Turner Overdrive

*4: "Black Water" - The Doobie Brothers

*5: "Keep Your Hands to Yourself" - The Georgia Satellites

6: "Amie" - Pure Prairie League

*7: "Slow Ride" - Foghat

*8: "Hold on Loosely" - .38 Special

**9: "Can't You See" - The Marshall Tucker Band

10: "Mississippi Queen" - Mountain

11: "Smoking Gun" - Robert Cray

12: "Honky Tonk Blues" - Nitty Gritty Dirt Band

13: "My Maria" - B.W. Stevenson

14: "Copperhead Road" - Steve Earle

15: "Dixie Chicken" - Little Feat

16: "There Goes Another Love Song" - The Outlaws

17: "Walk Away" - James Gang

One of my favourite bands, Nantucket Sleighride is an out and out masterpiece, along with many others such as Mississippi Queen, For Yasgurs farm, Never in My Life etc.

Leslie Wests guitar tone was(is) legendary, and Felix Pappalardi was an incredible bassist,...... factor in the two of them having great but different voices, and it was a fine recipe indeed.

i think they still play, but obviously with only West handling vocals.

I'd say he has a "mountainous" guitar tone.
