In A Tidewater Surge
I didn't see another thread like this, though if it exists I'm sorry. What are some absolutely essential prog albums that one should own? I've been getting more and more into it, but I'm still quite ignorant of all the brilliance that is out there. Suggestions would be greatly appreciated, and Gary, before you say you sent me a list multiple times, they were all lost in the void of facebook. Joshua
I am puzzled by rushgoober's omission of Yes's Tales From Topographic Oceans. Concerning Yes, I would highly suggest Close To The Edge as an essential prog record. I also would strongly disagree with his Jethro Tull picks. Essential prog Tull are the albums, Thick As A Brick and Passion Play. The latter record more so. It is sadly an underrated and misunderstood prog-rock masterpiece that gets dismissed even by other Tull fans. Requires a couple good focused listens for proper absorption. Brilliance. spacement
I would have to add Chris Squire's "Fish Out of Water" to that list. He recruited Bill Bruford, Patrick Moraz, and Mel Collins for that album. I think it is better than most Yes albums.

Brilliance. on Tales - I added it in. Thick is a Brick is great, but it still needs to grow on me more. Passion Play has some really great sections but that cartoony part just kind of kills it for me. Still, both are well worth owning...

Passion Play is genius from beginning to end, and highly underrated. By far my favorite Tull record. I'll admit it's probably a challenging record to get into at first, but it pays off in spades. Ted Barchetta
- Yes' Discography from 1971 to 1977 is the height of Prog Rock excellence. Such consistancy and power. - Anything Peter Gabriel Era-Genesis - Any King Crimson album from the 1970's - Obviously any Pink Floyd albums are essential - Camel is a fantastic underrated Prog band - to me they are all of the best aspects of the above bands smashed into a excellent Jazzy Prog-stew. - Not very well known, but Gryphon is a fantastic band from that era. I would best describe their sound as Medieval Prog-Folk. Really pretty and catchy melodies Oh, and Goob...you forgot Camel's The Snow Goose Really fantastic album. One of my new favorites. I shoulda/coulda put in The Snow Goose - I guess I'll edit it in. I think Moonmadness and Mirage are superior, but The Snow Goose is kind of a must have too... BTW, there are couple of typos in your post above - I think with Yes you meant to say 1970-1978 instead of 1971 to 1977.
