roadqueen
QUOTE (EmotionDetector @ Jun 3 2010, 05:13 PM) Even the songs that take me awhile to warm up to...I always get there eventually Most Rush to me isn't something you fall for 1st time. Maybe why they don't get radio play. It's not that catchy jingle type crap. I usually have to listen to a new album often, and the more I hear it the more I love it. So I understand what you mean. I was kinda surprised that both of these songs I liked 1st listen. Of course I like them more with each play.
Mara
QUOTE (Presto-digitation @ Jun 3 2010, 10:56 PM) It's interesting to me how BU2B was the grower for some folks. I took to that one more immediately. (realizes we're all different and all, etc) That was the one I "bonded" with right off as well. It's a little catchier in terms of the vocal melody -

Caravan I liked right away, but it's taken me many listens to anticipate the changes from one part to the next...because it's clearly not structured in a really logical or coherent way. LeaveMyThingAlone
by the way has gotten into Neil? I can't remember the last time i heard him play with such fury, energy, and intensity. He's doing things on the drums inn these 2 that remind me of the glory days of the 70's and 80's. It's like Nick R spiked Neil's coffee with viagra.... Best drumming Iv'e heard from Neil's in years...and best guitar playing Ive heard from Alex since Counterparts,....oh hell best songs I've heard since Counterparts! You know, I've read all the posts complaining about the "awkward" vocals, and the sudden shift out of nowhere to Alex's ripping solo, and I kept thinking, "well, this SHOULD bother me. . .but it doesn't". Forget it. It's Rush, as Gene Simmons says in the documentary. They do shit like this. Doesn't bug me in the least. Yeah, that solo is so out of nowhere and really not in tune with the rest of the song.....and you know what? May be one of my favorite solos he's ever done! LOL Seriously the funkyness of Caravan is exactly what the diehards want from these guys and Rush knew we'd love this one. This song is so gloriously Rush

Fridge
QUOTE (Presto-digitation @ Jun 4 2010, 04:28 AM) I'm listening to a band called Riverside now and they have 12-minute songs with changes that are so complex it takes many listens to even remember which song you're in. I don't know if you have already, but a band you might wat to check out are The Wildhearts They approach this from a totally different perspective, being more metal/punk/pop but there are lots of twists and turns in their songs. But yeah...the playing is out of control good. And it's official. I now like BU2B slighty better than Caravan. What a tremendous song....I can't get the chorus out of my head...and that bridge....oh my that bridge....Classic 80's Rush all over it!!!! Unreal...over the last two days, it has been in my head non-stop. Just an awesome song. Aggressive, Heavy, Hard-Hitting, Intense, and Furious. That's BU2B. Presto-digitation
My favorite forum post about the new songs (not TRF): QUOTE In songwriting terms, these .. tracks don't even exist for me. Listening to Caravan again now. More or less any dullard with a guitar could have come up with a dull sequence of riffs like this, few professional singers would have made as godawful a job of failing to integrate a vocal melody into it, and any clown could have bolted the various bits together at least as well as has happened here. With the best will in the world, I couldn't sincerely categorise this drivel as music. Listening to BU2B now; I think it's slightly worse. Dumb feck riffola meets a cringing vocal line and a deeply trite and pedestrian chorus. The only thing I like about it is the way Peart has given it an Internet abbreviation as a title. Keep in mind he's a dullard Brit (not saying all Brits are, pleaste don't mistake) who's written essentially the same review for every album after Hold Your Fire. Simply swap out song and album titles and insert the same tired bits and recycled adjectives and there you have it. He, at the very least might, earn himself an Emmy Award for daytime drama, not to mention a couple nods for overt hyperbole. ReRushed
QUOTE (ReRushed @ Jun 2 2010, 09:38 PM) Yeah, after multiple listens, I don't like the melody to "Caravan", either. But the music, yes the music, more than makes up for it. It's twisted and magnificently disjointed. Rush drives me freaking crazy! I spent a day away from these songs and gave them a listen tonight. I take back what I said about "Caravan". It works. The song dares you to listen to it and what distracts you on one listen, makes sense on another listen. I think it's a wonderful song. I won't call these songs Rush classics...yet. I will call them pretty damn good.

I must admit I was a little surprised and disappointed with this (obviously I know EXACTLY who you are talking about). I have pretty much agreed with quite a lot of his assessments of things, but I feel this is totally unfair, as Caravan in particular is musically very good indeed (though I can understand the vocals criticism). It does seem like negativity for negativitys' sake, which hand on heart I have never resorted to, any opinion I have expressed being an honest one. TheMeek
I deleted iTunes from my comp ages ago because I hate the shit out of it. I was momentarily mortified! But then I found out someone had uploaded to YouTube. Woohoo!!! AWESOME tracks! Definitely loving Caravan more, at this point. That crazy drum bit....oh man! And the bit where everything cuts away for just a second and it's just geddy playing...I'm thinking a perfect spot for a mini-solo for him, ala Driven.
