Best solo ever

I could never really get into Sonata Arctica, but that was pretty cool. Sounds kind of Symphony X-esque in my opinion. They have quite a few solos in a similar vain.

In The Dragon's Den was the first that came to mind.

Start at the 4:21 mark onward. The build up is awesome.

Hemispheres - Rush - First Guitar Solo From the beginning to the 31 second mark. My absolute favorite guitar solo.

Clap By Steve Howe Is A Knuckle-Buster.

This is my favorite solo portion of any song.. Ever... It's a guitar/keyboard solo duet.. Whenever I listen to this part I get so f***ing energetic! Thought I'd share..

And if you think this sucks, please open my eyes to better solos by recommending them wink.gif

Wow, you must really love Dream Theater as it sounds just like them. I guess this is prog metal today? A bit too fast and metally for me without enough soul.

In terms of the best solo ever, I'd have to think of that, way too many to mention. One piece of greatness that comes to mind is Deep Purple's Highway Star with the trading off of duplicate guitar and organ solos - it's hard to get too much more epic than that. Of course pretty much all my great solos would be from the 70's...

It's more power metal than prog; that style of solo is pretty standard for a lot of power metal bands these days

Well whichever it's a bit too breakneck pace without enough feeling for me personally. Not bad, mind you, just not my style.

Even Howe himself, to this day, says it's very difficult for him to do.

Moving away from the flash-over-substance picks which fill this thread, I'd pick two passionate solos which aren't hard to execute but are filled with feel:

Ritchie Blackmore's guitar breaks and guitar solo in Rainbow's

and Alex's guitar solo during
(Alex was never that emotive before or since; it's his best solo ever.)
